Winnipeg police shot man near downtown headquarters

An officer shot a man near the Winnipeg Police downtown headquarters Monday in what is being described as a “critical incident.”

Police Chief Danny Smyth told reporters the incident occurred at about 12:20 p.m. on a public walkway frequented by officers coming and going from police headquarters.

Smyth said the unidentified man has been discharged from hospital. He said he believes the officer involved was unharmed.

“I don’t know what led up to the incident,” Smyth said. “I don’t know specifically what happened in this event.”

Police have cordoned off the area. Smyth said an independent unit will lead the investigation going forward.
