Why Chinese-Indonesians fled to Canada for example

I must admit I'm a little tired to hear this myth heaps of people believe that Chinese-Indonesians control like 70%, 80%, or even 90% (take your pick!) of the economy in Indonesia. And the image of Chinese-Indonesians being cold-hearted and evil, because of a conduct of this tycoon who held staples in his warehouse to drive up the price during the Asian financial crisis (and I'm not even sure if this is true or it's just a rumour just like many others before or like the above).
Even if the act of this tycoon is true, it still doesn't mean that the Chinese-Indonesian women who were raped on the street in 1998 nor the Chinese-Indonesian mom-and-pop shop owners whose stores were vandalized deserved these!
And it really boiled my blood to hear derogatory remarks as if they did!

After reading one article is would appear that Suharto's relatives are still actively involved in manipulating the industry and economics of Indonesia. Is this an accurate perception or are there even deeper "controlling interests" at work behind the scenes?

Still the same cronies of Suharto, well his dynasty, his golf buddies: former gov. officials and some tycoons: notably is one Chinese-Indonesian tycoon and one native Indonesian one (both take turn to take place as no. 1 and 2 richest man in Indonesia).

Yeah, cause even the current government which is already the 4th or so after Suharto still reluctant to bring down the dynasty cause it would result in bringing down the former gov. officials and perhaps even some current ones. And of course nobody wants to open an old wound. The corruption is really like a waterfall, flowing from top to the bottom level of rank in the gov., and is so deeply rooted that I suppose if one would like to remove a tree, it has to be everything to the roots!

You know this myth about Chinese-Indonesians who comprise of less than 5% of the population controlling as ridiculous as say 70% (so they said) of the economy has been a widespread belief even outside Indonesia and has been depicted as such by foreign journalists, who are supposed to do their own research ay? So you can imagine inside Indonesia when the electoral process had been orchestrated especially during Suharto regime in 32 years, how the true info is made available about these things... I didn't bother voting anymore I must admit.

Do you think that this situation is intentional? The Suharto regime doesn't want anyone to participate in an electoral process so you keep the natives ignorant?

Having this myth to be a widespread belief is almost a certain thing to be intentional, otherwise there is no more scapegoat to blame like what happened twice already in 1965 and 1998.
My parents' generation watched and victimized by the 1965 one that led them to have to have 2 names: Chinese and alphabetical ones. My generation by the 1998 one. Who knows if another one can happen again...
