I have the choice of staying at any of the following places in Quebec for 5 weeks during the summer, for a french immersion program:

Trois-Rivières
Jonquière
Rivière-du-Loup
Quebec City
Trois-Pistoles
Montreal
Chicoutimi

What would you suggest? I am looking for an interesting place that will be lots of fun for a teen, but has enough of the french culture for me to completely immerse myself in (i am a native english speaking canadian).

I was thinking of Quebec City, in which case i will have to choose between Université Laval and Collège Saint-Charles Garnier. That is my 2nd question: which of the 2 would you choose?

Anyway, any of your ideas would be fantastic. Thanks!

It all depends. If you are learning French from scratch, then I'd suggest Montreal as it has both English and French speaking communities and you would be able to communicate fairly easily with the residents. If you can already converse in French, then by all means Quebec city would be a good choice.

Montreal is definitely a fun city to spend 5 weeks for a teen. But because there is so much English in Montreal, I fear you wouldn't find the immersion you are looking for... Don't get me wrong, there's a whole lot of French in Montreal, but at least as much as English... So it'll be much harder for you to truly learn French.

I'm from Quebec city, and trust me when I say there's a whole lot of fun to have there, especially in the summer... And think about this... This summer, Quebec city will be celebrating its 400th anniversary... There's going to be a lot of action going on. And Quebec city really is dominantly francophone, so you'll definitely get the immersion you're looking for...

Université Laval is a university, but Collège St-Charles Garnier is a high school! This should make your choice easier... (I don't know how old you are...)

The other cities you mention are definitely francophone, but I don't know if you'd have the fun you're looking for... Unless you're a fan of the great outdoors... But even then, 20 to 30 minutes car ride out of Quebec city will take you to great outdoor places...

I'd say go for Quebec city. If not, Montreal.

quebec city does sound really awesome! it seems like the ideal mix of culture and fun (montreal sounds lovely but i am an intermediate learner; i've been studying french for the past 10 years, since i was a kid. i suppose i'll have to save that for a non-immersion trip!)

i will be 17 when the trip occurs so it wouldn't be a bad idea to try the high school. however, i have a feeling the university would be a more adventurous and interesting environment. what do you think?

also, i don't reach quebec until july and i heard the festival is on june 24th :-(... oh well, i'll find a way..
do you have any ideas of fun events/occurrences in quebec city from late june to early august? they could be related to the 400th anniversary or anything at all. i'd like to get a taste of this place that everyone seems to rave about!

thanks a lot. this is really a lot of help!
