A woman who was struck by a wheel that had fallen off a dump truck in Mississauga Friday and left fighting for her life in hospital Friday was a runner well-known among local marathoners, a close friend said Friday.
Diane Tsialtas is a fighter, Ken Jacobs said in a phone interview.
“She survived the Boston bombing, she was there,” Jacobs said. “She was there, she survived it. Hopefully, she can survive this.”
Peel Regional Police said a woman walking on the sidewalk at Meadowvale Blvd. and Syntex Dr. Friday was rushed to hospital after two wheels fell off a dump truck and one of them struck her.
First responders and police were called to the scene around 7:50 a.m.
The woman, in her late 40s, was initially taken to hospital with critical injuries but has since been upgraded to serious condition. Police have not confirmed her identity.
Jacobs said Tsialtas remained in grave condition Friday afternoon after being airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital, where her husband and parents were by her side.
She is well-known in Toronto’s marathon running community, he added.
“She’s probably the best damn friend that I have right now,” Jacobs said. “It’s just crazy, it’s just ridiculous.”
His friend had a habit of going for walks, he said.
“She’s very stubborn and she’s a fighter so we’re praying for a miracle,” he said.
The driver of the dump truck remained on scene and was interviewed by police. The investigation is continuing.
Const. Thomas Ruttan said it “may take some time” to determine what caused the wheels to come off while the truck was moving.

On her Facebook page, Diane Tsialtas noted that she safely completed the 117th Boston marathon that was marred by a deadly terror attack. But it was a simple walk near her Mississauga workplace that proved more perilous on Friday morning, after she was struck by an errant tire — one of two that flew off a dump truck.
Tsialtas, who works at a Mary Kay warehouse in the quality control division, was flown to a Toronto hospital where she died on Saturday.
The incident happened on Meadowvale Road near Mississauga Road and Highway 401 around 7:50 a.m. on Friday.
Police say the tire that struck her weighed about 200 pounds.
The Ministry of Transportation has launched an investigation, but a Peel police officer on scene remarked that the truck did not appear safe.
“It’s the duty of the owner operators to maintain the condition of the vehicles,” said Const. Rachel Gibbs. “From looking at this vehicle it clearly wasn’t well maintained.”
The truck had One Touch Haulage Inc. stamped on the driver’s door.
CityNews obtained that company’s operator record, finding that it has a “satisfactory” safety rating.
The driver, who was shaken, remained on the scene. He could face charges under highway traffic act for a detached wheel offence, up to a maximum fine of $50,000, as well as other criminal charges.
No charges have been laid.
