... And every candidate had to officially run as an independent?

What would be some advantages or disadvantages of such a system in your opinion?

Your thoughts?

If everyone was truly independent ...How would the PM be chosen?

RE: What if political par

A house full of independents would be a house full of unofficial parties and backroom deal-making. You'd have to give the speaker a whip and pistol just to get through Question Period.

You are probably correct in that assessment if it was to happen without other criteria and restructuring in place.

Given the state of our current government a House of Commons full of independants would not be a good thing, I suspect it would be simply chaos at this time in our history...........

I'm all for it. But wouldn't that step on freedom of association rights? People with common views are going to want to ban together and form a party.

By a vote in Parliament.

Not necessarily. Let's suppose I join a political party, there's still no political distinction at the workplace. The workplace doesn't care if I'm a member of any political party, religious organization or what have you; that's just my business.

So government could teat political parties the same way. They're free to organize, but the government simply doesn't acknowledge their existance in any official manner, so it simply would have nothing to do with the government.

Hmmm... You might be right. So maybe it is better to recognize it, so as to keep the problems on the surface.

:?: Why do these suddenly sound like the same arguments for legalizing drugs and prostitution :?:

Yes they will, I think that is more human nature than anything else.

Although the thought of a House seated with only independants is similar in concept to what I have proposed on other threads my thoughts on a restructuring of our federal goverment would require more control and restrictions that our current system could encompass.

I am not sure it would improve anything and may, as Reverend Blair pointed out, may cause a lot more undertable negotiations and deals and that is one thing we do not want. to strive for more transparency should be the goal not less and i think this concept would create less...............

If there were no political parties our system of government would have to be completely different. There could be no backbenchers. In fact, it could not be two groups of people facing off against each other either. The House of Commons would have to take the form of a loop with the house speaker in the middle rotating around to address members.

This new Federal Government could also not have a lot of responsibilities. Just like in the States the residual powers would go to provinces. As of now we have problems passing legislation with four political parties. Imagine over 300 with their own platform. The only way to pass legislation would be to link up enough of these votes to pass a single piece of legislation. But people have priorities so some priorities will be trashed in favor of a better one.

Along with that there was once a ruling party. Without a ruling party everyone is making deals with everyone. In the end maybe one or two bills may be passed per year. Of course considering the expense of such an operation it may not even be worth while to have.

Re: What if political parties lost all official recognition.

The provinces have functioning partisan or council based governments operating already and the provinces are where the political parties would spar. As I have said before the Federal government should only be responsible for truly national issues and foriegn affairs but that is it, the provinces should take care of their own bussiness without federal intervention and deal with all things internal to the country through a forum, be it a restructured senate of whatever. To have the House of Commons non-partisan or seated as independants at this point would be desirable becasue there is clear and defined division of powers built into the system and we no longer have some political faction raining over the provinces who already have different agendas and needs.............
