In Svalbard, no immigrant has taken social assistance in decades if not generations. Not one! And this in spite of the fact that legally, anyone in the world could travel, work, or do business in Svalbard visa-free.

Now most immigrants to Canada likewise receive no social assistance, but some do. And this in spite of Canada's comparatively more closed borders.

How can Canada achieve the same rate of financial independence as Svalbard?

What the hell does Svalbard have to do with anything? I'm guessing every immigrant in Nunavut has a job too. All three hundred of them.

Well actually, the only social assistance Svalbard offers is a ticket out.

Now as for Svalbard'population, given its open-border policy, that's beside the point, especially compared to Canada's comparatively more closed-ordered policy.

Svalbard knows how to attract the right kind of immigrant it seems.
