Voltage Pictures ordered to pay $22,000 to TekSavvy in illegal downloads case

Voltage Pictures LLC must pay Internet provider TekSavvy Solutions Inc. about $22,000 to cover the costs of handing over the names of 2,000 people it says illegally shared its films over a two-month period in 2012, the Federal Court ruled Tuesday. The decision brings the high-profile case to a close, which sets a precedent about how copyright holders can pursue legal remedies when their work is stolen by illegal downloaders in Canada.
In February of last year, the court ruled the plaintiff must pay Chatham, Ont.-based TekSavvy the costs associated with tracking down the contact information of allegedly pirating customers. Tuesday’s decision sets the cost to Voltage at about $10 per Internet protocol (IP) address, far less than the $350,000 TekSavvy sought but more than the $884 Voltage argued it owed.
James Zibarras, a lawyer for Voltage, said the decision “confirms the court’s commitment to facilitate anti-piracy and allow companies like Voltage to pursue pirates.”

I was into torrents for a while but I'm not enough of a movie buff to really make it worth the effort.
I do miss limewire though. It was easy to get a variety of music.

I just purchase to be honest, I used to torrent but yeah, it's not worth the time. I do enjoy having my media digital though. I think the advent of making getting the media easier and keeping the prices low, I think illegal downloading will trickle off. Most people will willingly pay a reasonable price.

There will always be people who will want to 'get it for free'.
I have friends that play movies in the way most people play the radio. They have
an endless need for more content although they never seem to actually watch a movie
without babbling through half of it. They get them from a buddy who torrents.
I don't bother mainly because I don't watch many movies and I have the movie channels on my Bell
so there's enough content for me.

You know what I think it boils down to is delivery on demand. I have my cable package with movies but on demand is limited to what they have playing, which is sometimes interesting and sometimes not. And there's no more video stores of course. But for a couple of bucks I often rent a movie on iTunes, there selection is huge. Digital can be delivered instantly, people are coming to expect that, so I figure if you give them a huge selection with instant delivery, many will fork over a few bucks rather than download.
