Well this could be a load of cabbage .... I have a great suspicion when I see anything to do with your stomach raising your IQ

Vegetarians are more intelligent, says study

by FIONA MACRAE Last updated at 22:00pm on 14th December 2006

Frequently dismissed as cranks, their fussy eating habits tend to make them unpopular with dinner party hosts and guests alike.
But now it seems they may have the last laugh, with research showing vegetarians are more intelligent than their meat-eating friends.
A study of thousands of men and women revealed that those who stick to a vegetarian diet have IQs that are around five points higher than those who regularly eat meat.
Writing in the British Medical Journal, the researchers say it isn't clear why veggies are brainier - but admit the fruit and veg-rich vegetarian diet could somehow boost brain power.
The researchers, from the University of Southampton, tracked the fortunes of more than 8,000 volunteers for 20 years.
At the age of ten, the boys and girls sat a series of tests designed to determine their IQ.
When they reached the age of 30, they were asked whether they were vegetarian and their answers compared to their childhood IQ score.
Around four and a half per cent of the adults were vegetarian - a figure that is broadly in line with that found in the general population.
However, further analysis of the results showed those who were brainiest as children were more likely to have become vegetarian as adults, shunning both meat and fish.
The typical adult veggie had a childhood IQ of around 105 - around five points higher than those who continued to eat meat as they grew up.
The vegetarians were also more likely to have gained degrees and hold down high-powered jobs.
There was no difference in IQ between strict vegetarians and those who classed themselves as veggie but still ate fish or chicken.
However, vegans - vegetarians who also avoid dairy products - scored significantly lower, averaging an IQ score of 95 at the age of 10.
Researcher Dr Catharine Gale said there could be several explanations for the findings, including intelligent people being more likely to consider both animal welfare issues and the possible health benefits of a vegetarian diet.
Previous work has shown that vegetarians tend to have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol, cutting their risk of heart attacks. They are also less likely to be obese.
Alternatively, a diet which is rich in fruit, vegetables and wholegrains may somehow boost brain power.
Dr Gale said: 'Although our results suggest that children who are more intelligent may be more likely to become vegetarian as adolescents or young adults, it does not rule out the possibility that such a diet might have some beneficial effect on subsequent cognitive performance.
'Might the nature of the vegetarians' diet have enhanced their apparently superior brain power? Was this the mechanism that helped them achieve the disproportionate nature of degrees?'
High-profile vegetarians include singers Paul McCartney and Morrissey and actress Jenny Seagrove.
Past exponents of a meat-free lifestyle include George Bernard Shaw and Benjamin Franklin.
Promoting the cause, Shaw said, 'A mind of the calibre of mine cannot drive its nutriment from cows', while Franklin stated that a vegetarian diet resulted in 'greater clearness of head and quicker comprehension'.
Liz O'Neill, of the Vegetarian Society, said: 'We’ve always known that vegetarianism is an intelligent, compassionate choice benefiting animals, people and the environment. Now, we’ve got the scientific evidence to prove it.
'Maybe that explains why many meat-reducers are keen to call themselves vegetarians when even they must know that vegetarians don’t eat chicken, turkey or fish!'

Like so many studies I wonder if the subjects cause a flaw in the study before you start.

Many people who are veggetarians are so because they have looked at the world with a different set of eyes. being that they are not simple to follow the norm therefore must have some brain power to figure out their own path in life.

I'm NOT a veggetarian ..love my meat!!! and may not agree with many who are..but dumb is not a word I would have for someone who ventures in their own dirrection.

This is kind of like having a study that says playing bingo at a hall makes you stupid....more like stupid people go to Bingo halls..don't you think?

Good analogy, O.B. pretty much my take on it too, tho I must say out of my group of friends, MOST of the vegan/vegetarians are more "considerate" of a lot of stuff than the omnivores...
I eat a vegetarian diet and have strictly for more than 12 years, but I only do so for my own reasons and don't really care what folks eat- to me it's about as important as what kind of TP they wipe their butts with, ya know?? (tho it would be better for the whole planet if everyone were vegan/vegetarian, it's not something one can dictate, the programming is TOO strong)

The easist way to clear your head and raise your IQ is to fast. It's been a brain booster for years at colleges and uni's where folks who wish to do well on exams lay off the grub for awhile. Even better than eatin' carrots!

I read somewhere that they are investigating these studies because groups that do these studies are in conflicts of interests. Many of them got funding from an industry that would benefit from these studies. I read it in the paper so I don’t have a link for it.

this study could also mean that smarter people turn vegetarian, not that vegetarianism turns people smart. show me a study where they change individuals' iq's by changing their diet, and then perhaps I'll give up my steak. Because I'll tell you, when my iron's running low, I'm not so bright.

I would think that the various growth boosters, antibiotics, lack of exercise, etc. would have an impact on the people who ingested the meat from the stock. I wonder if the people performing the study took that into consideration.
Besides that, I've noticed that vegetarians are almost always cold. I wondered why. A little research and I found something called brown adipose tissue (brown fat) .........

There is very little, if any, in vegetables. Actually there's little fat of any kind in veggies.

Besides that, IQs are overrated.

I think you've hit the nail here. I think being a vegetarian is often and ethical or intellectual choice people make. I was a vegetarian for years. Didn't miss meat at all, with the exception of hamburgers(go figure!).

But to your point, people who choose this path are often intellectuals, in particular University "types".

Maybe they are smarter, and I do admire their dedication to not eating meat, but I couldn't do it. It would take an act of God to seperate me from a good roast beef dinner:)

I've developed intolerance to meat taste a year ago as a result of a bloody part of medical research I was doing, and my diet is relying mostly on veggies, seafood and fruits now. Never expected I'd stop eating meat :)

It is always important, when considering statistics to keep the ideas of correlation and causality distinct in ones mind. The very nature of the study suggests that people who have slightly higher IQ scores as children are more likely to end up as vegetarians. However, all the study does is say that there is a correlation. So if your IQ is a little higher than the mean, you are more likely to become vegetarian is just as good a conclusion as, if you abstain from eating red meat you are more likely to have a slightly increased IQ score. Also, isn't the very nature of IQ scores questionable, due to the sexual/racial bias included in it?

doesnt work if you're diabetic. that's the easiest way to go to hospital. I would have thought it was a bit shaky for non-diabetics too... even non-diabetics get low blood sugar from not eating, and that clouds your thought. And i know for a fact that high blood sugar can help your memory

It's kind of exciting to learn that all us poor folk enjoy higher IQ's than people able to afford meat!

maybe they're including piscitarians, those who eat fish in the term "vegetarian". it's often been said that fish is "brain food"... maybe it's true?
