Random useless information is a great way to bring up conversation. For instance the red hot chili peppers could not write a song for months, because anthony had writers block so bad the band almost broke up.

The port side a ship is so named because the first ships had a huge rudder hanging over the other side (the 'steer board') side thus preventing the ship from 'porting' on that side.

The starboard side of the ship is so named because of the 'steer board'.

The Brits wanted their cabin to be on the port side heading out, and on the starboard side on the return trip. I'm not sure what the view would be of, though.
