U.S. reopens probe of gov't action in Arar case
The United States is reopening an investigation of its government's handling of Maher Arar, a U.S. official has confirmed.

Homeland Security has new information that warrants the reopening of the case.
The watchdog's original investigation concluded that U.S. immigration acted properly in deporting Arar.

"Should we determine that one or more conclusions in our report are incorrect, we will publish a supplement,'' Skinner told legislators in a statement on Capitol Hill.
....
Arar remains on the U.S. no-fly list despite an acknowledgment by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the case was bungled.
Rice, while not apologizing, said U.S. officials didn't communicate with Canada before Arar was sent to Syria.

Typically sitting on their high horse, or winding around the case like a snake.

We, the Canadian people, exonerated Arar and paid him for our part of his suffering. RCMP bigwig "resigned" as a consequence of his bungling!!

I find it insulting from the US that they drag their feet in acknowledging their mishandling of a Canadian citizen. We are neighbors, for crying out loud!!! They only seem to know how to make demands on us... like fight more in Afghanistan..., than they know how to be honest and admit their intended mishandling of Arar, and at least apologize for starters. They owe him big time!!!

Loon, Justr the fact that Condi Rice is involved tells me there is a lot going on to make this go away but it won't. Must be a case of "How did we let this happen" and now they don't know how to make it disappear. Just another in the annals of the White House for this President and his sidekick Dick Cheney.

Hi, Norm;
if they wanted to make it go away, they could just admit they made a mistake, then apologize and pay him 10 mil like Canada did. I'm sure he would accept, and sign not to pursue any further claims.

I was looking for more news on this case and came upon this court document. It's a pdf file I can't copy from, but here is a short excerpt from James B. Comey's, the Deputy Attorney General of the United States, statement showing the excuse they are hiding behind.
...It contains numerous references to intelligence sources and methods, the disclosures of which reasonably could be expected to cause exceptionally grave or serious damage to the national security of the United States and its foreign relations or activities.
Disclosure of this information would enable adversaries of the United States to avoid detection by the nations intelligence activities, sources, and methods, and/or take measures to defeat or neutralize those activities, thus causing extremely grave or serious damage to the United States' national interests.....

Three years later and still no break-through. Arar might be spending his 10mil he got from Canada to hold the US accountable for their mega screw-up.

The two German guys, Murat Kurnaz and Khaled el-Masri should also sue the US for wrongfully kidnapping, torturing, and incarcerating them.

Can you see, Norm, what a bully the US is? They literally get away with murder!

Loon,
This whole arrangement of the supposed security system is almost without any safe guards. Once someone is their sights the trouble begins for the little guy. They don't care either about the outcome. Money is only a means of accomplishing an objective. I can only imagine what this person went through and now is still trying to get extricated from. Just consider the multiple means they have of making life miserable for someone legally. It is scary to say the least.

It is very scary!! And the worst is, if your own country betrays you!!!

I just posted the story of the German Guy, el-Masri. It gives us "little people" a quick glance into the bully's operating room!

And to think, we have a government that sympathizes, harmonizes and fights together with this bully!!! It leaves us citizens of Canada very vulnerable! Sampson, Omar Khadr, and Arar are warnings for the rest of us.
