An Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy is in the hospital with a gunshot wound after he was involved in a shootout with an armed suspect.
Sheriff Deryl Loar said his deputy was making a traffic stop on Andrew Coffee, Jr., 53, who was riding a scooter on Old Dixie Highway at 3 a.m.
Loar said Coffee fumbled in his pocket for ID and produced a gun instead, causing the deputy to pull his weapon.
Loar said there was a foot chase along Old Dixie Highway, and the deputy shot Coffee at least twice, while the deputy was also shot.
A K9 later located Coffee, and he was transported by Trauma Hawk to a hospital.
The deputy is in stable condition, according to the sheriff.
Coffee has an extensive criminal history, and served 21 years in prison for attempted murder, according to Loar.
