NEW YORK/WASHINGTON — Federal investigators on Wednesday executed a search warrant at the Manhattan apartment of Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and personal lawyer to former U.S. President Donald Trump, as they probe his business dealings with Ukraine.

A lawyer for Giuliani, Bob Costello, confirmed that a search warrant had been executed. Electronic devices were among the items seized, according to the New York Times. Giuliani, 76, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have been investigating Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine, which included an investigation before the 2020 election into now-President Joe Biden and his son Hunter’s dealings in that country. The Bidens have denied wrongdoing.

Giuliani began representing Trump, a fellow Republican, in April 2018 in connection with former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

While the search warrant does not mean Giuliani committed a crime, it signals that investigators persuaded a judge they believed criminal conduct occurred and that executing the warrant might uncover relevant evidence.

“This is a seismic moment in the investigation,” said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

“It’s a big deal to execute a search warrant concerning an attorney because of issues of attorney-client privilege,” she added. “It’s a bigger deal to execute a search warrant of an attorney who worked for the former president.”

Michael Cohen, a former personal lawyer to Trump who has become a critic of his former boss, tweeted: “Here we go folks!!!”

In Washington, Giuliani’s role was complex, with the former mayor frequently proclaiming himself a business consultant and lawyer in the private sector even as he enjoyed extraordinary access to the halls of power.

Two former Giuliani associates, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, have been charged with campaign finance violations and other crimes.

Parnas’ and Fruman’s work included efforts to help Giuliani dig up damaging information about the Bidens, and what prosecutors called an effort to remove then-U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

In December, Giuliani tweeted, “I’m proud to be number one on Biden Vindictive government list. Sounds like the DOJ anti-Trumpers can’t wait for Biden to make DOJ the GOVERNMENT Secret Police like they were under Obama.”

Giuliani gained early renown in the 1980s as the top federal prosecutor attorney in Manhattan, where he put leaders of five New York Mafia families in prison and successfully prosecuted Wall Street’s “junk bond king,” Michael Milken.

He later won wide acclaim and national fame as “America’s Mayor” for his efforts in helping New York City deal with and recover from the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. In 2008, Giuliani ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination.

NEW YORK — Federal agents on Wednesday searched Rudolph Giuliani’s Manhattan apartment and office, escalating their investigation into the Ukrainian business dealings of the onetime personal lawyer of former President Donald Trump.

A lawyer for Giuliani, 76, confirmed that search warrants had been executed, and that authorities had seized cell phones. The warrants included an allegation that Giuliani failed to register as a foreign agent, a violation of lobbying laws.

Prior to the 2020 presidential election, Giuliani led an effort to dig up dirt on then-Democratic contender Joe Biden and his son Hunter in Ukraine.

Biden defeated the Republican Trump and is now president. He and his son have denied wrongdoing.

In a statement, Giuliani’s lawyer Bob Costello defended his client and suggested the investigation was politically motivated.

“Mayor Giuliani has not only denied this allegation, but offered twice in the past two years through his attorney Bob Costello to demonstrate that it is entirely untrue,” the statement said. “Twice the offer was rejected.”

Costello said the electronics seized were “replete” with information protected by attorney-client privilege.

A spokesman for U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss in Manhattan declined to comment.

Federal agents also executed a search warrant on Wednesday at the home of Victoria Toensing and Joseph diGenova, who are spouses, Giuliani associates and former prosecutors, and seized Toensing’s cellphone.

Toensing and diGenova have also represented Dmytro Firtash, a Ukrainian oligarch who has been indicted in the United States on bribery and racketeering charges and has fought extradition from Vienna.

Federal prosecutors have been looking at Giuliani for nearly 1-1/2 years.

In November 2019, they sought records of payments to Giuliani as part of an active criminal investigation, according to a grand jury subpoena seen by Reuters.

Prosecutors were investigating money laundering, wire fraud, campaign finance violations, making false statements, obstruction of justice and violations of the federal Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), the subpoena said.

FARA requires “certain agents of foreign principals” to periodically disclose their relationships with them, including financial transactions.

‘SEISMIC MOMENT’

While the search warrant does not mean Giuliani committed a crime, it signals that investigators had reason to believe criminal conduct had occurred, and convinced a judge that a search might uncover evidence of a crime.

Giuliani gained renown in the 1980s as Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor, taking on leaders of top Mafia families and Wall Street’s “junk bond king” Michael Milken.

He later won national fame as “America’s Mayor” for helping New York City recover from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year.”

But Giuliani’s image was stained by his dealings with Ukraine, and more recently by his promotion of baseless claims of fraud to overturn last year’s election results and give Trump a second White House term.

COMPLEX ROLE

Giuliani began representing Trump, a fellow Republican and longtime fellow New Yorker, in April 2018 in connection with then-Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

In Washington, Giuliani’s role was complex, with the former mayor frequently proclaiming himself a business consultant and lawyer in the private sector even as he enjoyed extraordinary access to the halls of power.

While Giuliani has yet to be charged with a crime, two former associates, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, have been charged with campaign finance violations and other crimes.

Parnas and Fruman helped Giuliani investigate the Bidens, and undertake what prosecutors called an effort to remove then-U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

Hunter Biden had sat on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian natural gas company.

Michael Cohen, another former personal lawyer for Trump and now a harsh critic of his onetime boss, tweeted after Wednesday’s searches became public: “Here we go folks!!!”

Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to campaign finance, tax evasion and other crimes and was sentenced to three years in prison. He is now serving his term in home confinement.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday criticized the federal investigation into Rudy Giuliani and said he had no idea what U.S. agents were looking for when they searched his former personal lawyer’s Manhattan apartment and office.

Federal prosecutors have been investigating Giuliani for nearly 1-1/2 years, including a 2019 grand jury subpoena seen by Reuters for his financial records as part of an inquiry into possible money laundering, wire fraud, campaign finance violations, making false statements and obstruction of justice, in addition to foreign agent allegations.

Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, once led the Southern District of New York now investigating his Ukrainian business dealings while serving as Trump’s attorney. He has not formally been accused of any wrongdoing.

“It’s very, very unfair,” Trump, a Republican, told Fox Business Network in an telephone interview. “Rudy is a patriot who loves this country and I don’t know what they’re looking for, what they’re doing. They said it had to do with filing of various papers. Rudy loves this country so much.”

Giuliani’s lawyer, Bob Costello, said on Wednesday authorities had seized cell phones and computers. The search warrants included an allegation that Giuliani violated lobbying laws by failing to register as a foreign agent, an allegation he denies, Costello said.

Giuliani began representing Trump in 2018 amid a federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which Trump won.

Ahead of the 2020 election, Giuliani led an effort to dig up dirt on then-Democratic contender Joe Biden and his son Hunter in Ukraine. Biden defeated Trump and took office earlier this year. Both Biden and his son have denied wrongdoing.

Giuliani’s lawyer, in his statement Wednesday, suggested the investigation of his client was politically motivated – a charge the White House denied.

“The DOJ is independent now,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told CNN on Thursday, referring to the Department of Justice. The White House did not receive any notice that Giuliani’s apartment would be raided, she added.

Giuliani faces separate legal actions regarding his actions surrounding the November 2020 election and the deadly Jan. 6 mob attack on the U.S. Capitol – one from a Democratic congressman and another from voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems.
