TILLSONBURG, Ont. (CP) - Two newly christened city councillors in Ontario are breathing easy after securing their jobs in unorthodox fashion.
After Dave Oliphant won an East Zorra-Tavistock council seat by just one vote on election night, a recount was held and he ended up tied with his opponent. So, as decreed by the Municipal Elections Act, the winner had to be determined purely by chance.
Oliphant, the incumbent, held onto his seat - after his name was drawn from a hat.
On Wednesday, John Paterson also had luck on his side when his name was pulled from a box to give him a council seat in Leamington.
After election night Paterson led by three votes, and after the subsequent recount, he and his opponent were tied.
