John McCain says he can’t ‘in good conscience’ vote for GOP health bill, leaving it all but dead

WASHINGTON—Sen. John McCain declared his opposition Friday to the GOP’s last-ditch effort to repeal and replace “Obamacare,” dealing a likely death blow to the legislation and, perhaps, to the Republican Party’s years of vows to kill the program.

“I cannot in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal,” McCain said in a statement, referring to the bill by Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

“I believe we could do better working together, Republicans and Democrats, and have not yet really tried,” McCain said. “Nor could I support it without knowing how much it will cost, how it will affect insurance premiums, and how many people will be helped or hurt by it.”

McCain was the decisive vote against the GOP’s last repeal effort, in July. Once again, the 81-year-old senator, battling brain cancer in the twilight of a remarkable career, emerged as the destroyer of his own party’s signature promise to voters.

President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had both been pushing hard for the bill in recent days, and McCain’s best friend in the Senate, Graham, was an author. Trump declared during the presidential campaign that he would quickly demolish Obamacare and “it will be easy.”

Until a Health Care bill is introduced that covers all Americans who choose to participate and the members of Congress too. 1 plan for all or it will never be changed by this dufus GOP group!

Trump has another 6 years to get this through.. Hell, maybe in that time he can get Gitmo closed and make good on Obama's 1st term promise.

hehehehe

I would not bet on anything beyond January 2019. That is when the GOP might well lose its Congressional majority. And then, of course, there is the expiration of the agreement requiring only a one vote majority in the Senate to approve legislation. That happens on September 30.

Executive Order.

Obama made a mockery of that power, why not Trump?

I don't think you understand how an executive order works in the USA. It cannot be used to reverse major legislation such as the Affordable Care Act. Any attempt to use an executive order that way would be looked upon as intruding on areas reserved for Congress and would probably be declared unconstitutional.
