Toronto Dumpster to Sumpter

By

James Bredin

The socialists at City Hall have their agenda,
They want you to read their pompous propaganda,
Send garbage to Michigan down the four o one,
To Sumpter Township because it’s so much fun.

They say an incinerator could cause some smoke,
And the environmentalists might all up and croak,
Can’t see a problem sending garbage to the States,
In big eighteen wheelers and no need for debates.

Trucking stuff a day away gets it out of sight,
And no questions please because they’re always right,
There is this problem about American chagrin,
What’s that sound from City Hall – why it’s a violin.

Can’t send it to Adam’s Mine at Kirkland Lake,
Because the sky might fall on those who partake,
While every other city can find a dump nearby,
And Toronto politicians would never lie.

They’ll make an announcement to their media soon,
Maybe next year on some quiet afternoon,
They’d announce it now but you wouldn’t understand,
Technical stuff but they have it all planned.

They’re going to find a dump when the mayor has the time,
Or the Americans close the border to our grime
Did someone say they should dump it in the Lake?
But somewhere far away from our water intake.

Toronto has a very good recycling program, including a green bin for organic waste. The problem is population and the amount of Garbage that is resulted.

Why not one of those wonderful environmental friendly incinerator, complete with scrubbers of the highest order? But all will say NIMBY.

This problem has existed for years. Liberal, NDP, Conservative. Each party in turn sat on it until they were out of power, leaving a decision for the next sucker.

Surely the most stupid solution has to be trucking it to Michigan. Has anybody asked what they do with it? Or is it a case of out of sight out of mind.

Some political will and decision making is required.

Every person in the GTA should be ashamed that we are trucking it to Michigan! Hundreds of garbage-laden trucks heading down the 401 every day. How much more pollution is that sending into the environment?? There should be a law that every town, city, county deal with its garbage within its own borders, as long as a technically feasible site exists. Premier McGuinty where are you? They have to start a system where households buy special bags or tags at a cost that acurately reflects the full cost of taking care of garbage. They have to start levying surcharges on packaging to put pressure on retailers to reduce. They have to beef up recycling programs.

Easier said than done, there is a lot of Environmental friendly solutions but unfortunately it is costly and if it costs a penny they will charge the people two.... I do not trust any government for all that matters. People should take some matters into their own hands and just do their part by recycling as much as they can. A far as the border goes, the city of Toronto is quite full to the borders if you have not noticed. There are a lot of people in the suburbs also happen to work in Toronto.
