BEIJING — About a month before President Bush is to make his first state visit to China, reports have surfaced that the U.S.-made presidential plane for Chinese President Jiang Zemin has been found to be bugged with at least 20 listening devices.

The Financial Times and the Washington Post reported today that the newly outfitted Boeing 767 was planted with tiny bugging devices, including one bug embedded in the headboard of the presidential bed on board the aircraft, according to unidentified sources. The devices were sophisticated models that could be operated by satellite, the Financial Times reported.

The British newspaper said Jiang was apparently furious at the discovery, made after aircraft personnel heard a strange whining noise during test flights last September.....

How and when the listening devices were installed remains unexplained because the plane was fenced off and under constant watch while in San Antonio. It was flown to China via Hawaii last August, the Texas newspaper said.

....intelligence-gathering lies at the very root of Washington’s relationship with Communist China. In the early 1970s, before formal diplomatic ties were established, Beijing allowed the CIA to set up a listening post in China to monitor the Soviet Union. (End excerpts)

Hundreds of handheld pagers exploded in Lebanon and parts of Syria on Tuesday, killing several people, including members of the militant group Hezbollah, and wounding thousands, officials said.

Hezbollah and government officials are saying Israel is responsible for the attack, which wounded about 2,750 people, The Associated Press reported.....

The pager attack killed at least nine people, including at least two Hezbollah members and an eight-year-old girl. Ali Ammar, the son of one of Hezbollah’s members in the Lebanese parliament was among the dead.

Iranian state-run IRNA news agency said Mojtaba Amani, the country’s ambassador, was slightly wounded and being treated at a hospital.

The wave of explosions continued for around an hour after the first detonations, which took place at about 3:45 p.m. local time. It’s not immediately clear how the devices were detonated, but the pagers are how Hezbollah communicates, Reuters reported.

A Hezbollah official who spoke anonymously with the AP said the explosions were a result of “a security operation” that targeted the devices.

People were seen lying on the pavement with wounds on their hands or near their pants pockets, where the devices were.

In the past, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned the group’s members not to carry cellphones because Israel could track them to carry out strikes, the AP reported... (End excerpts)

If the US military wouldn't be caught dead building supercomputers using Chinese kit, there's no reason to think the People's Liberation Army would risk using American gear, argues Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

"The Chinese military, no different than the American military, will not seek each other's technology out to be built on top of it," he said during a recent interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria.

Huang's rationale is the Chinese can't rely on the technology to work when they need it, as it could be "limited at any time."... (End excerpts)

4. Poster's Comment:

(a) The deadly clandestine operations involving Israeli pager blasts in Lebanon and US-built bugged presidential plane for China prove the Nvidia CEO's logic in saying the Chinese military will avoid using US technology because of the risks associated with doing so. Taking such risks at the crucial moment could result in Chinese fighter jets dropping from the sky like dead birds, and Chinese submarines sinking all the way to the ocean floor like rocks and stones. With American chips in its components, the Chinese presidential plane may find itself crashing through the gates of hell and straight into the bedroom of Yama, the god of Death. Chinese critical infrastures could explode one after another like Israeli pager blasts in Lebanon. If the US does not trust Chinese chips and technology, why should China?

It was reported that Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) of the House Select Committee on China hade raised objections to the resumption of H20 equivalent graphics processing units (GPU) sales to China in a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. He also requested a briefing on how the Department will handle potential export license applications for Nvidia’s H20 GPUs—an advanced AI processor previously banned from sale to China.

The guy claims to be a commonsense leader working for Michigan. Why is he losing his common sense like all other simple-minded China hawks and becoming so Sinophobic? After all, the H20 chip is regarded as Nvidia’s "4th best" AI chip.

(b) The above-mentioned clandestine operations remind me of my friend's anecdote some years ago. While studying in primary school, the pupil seated beside him always copied his answers in mathematics. One day he was so fed up with the copycat that he decided to teach him a lesson. He purposely wrote all the wrong answers for his sums. After his classmate copied all the wrong answers, he secretly corrected the sums in his own book before handing it up to the teacher for marking.

(c) “To Get Rich Is Glorious” in China. There is an unhealthy tendency in China in the frantic rush to make a quick buck by making the same kind of products. Hence there are at least 30 Chinese cell phone brands and 39 Chinese electric car brands. Those Chinese firms end up fighting and killing one another, resulting in most of them closing down in the end. As the saying goes, "Make hay while the sun shines." If Nvidia and other US chip companies don't sell their products to them now, when are they going to sell to them? After most of the Chinese companies go bankrupt? Remember, remember, there is a limit to the number of sunny days.

(d) There is another important reason why China must not rely on American technology. Using an analogy, if a singer imitates another singer (e.g. Elvis Presley), he could never surpass his idol to be a really successful singer. Similarly, if China forever depends on US technology, it will never surpass America in technology. At most it will always be one step behind Uncle Sam. Hence it is of utmost urgency for China to be self-reliant and innovative in technology. After all, the Chinese military does not need to build a multi-billion corporation to do research and renovation in computer chips. A laboratory and some super scientists will do. China has made great progress in the technology of space exploration, nuclear development, weaponry and aircraft carriers under severe restrictions and sanctions by America and its Western allies. There is no reason it cannot repeat the same feat in the development of chip technology.
