Tim Hortons: Roll up THIS (rant)

I think the "roll up the rim" campaign is at least somewhat "disgusting".

I find Tim Horton's "roll up the rim" promomtion...well...disgusting. It is not that I despise large corporations for enticing customers with "free" goodies to ensure customer loyalty, so much that, the actual process of winning is repulsive for all involved.

The first problem is actually rolling the rim. It is hard, which is not disgusting on it's own, but this sets the stage. Yes, there is a certain skill involved here and many Canadians probably revel in their own particular method/skill at doing so - some, maybe not even disgusting methods. However, on the weekend I watched slack jawed as a women knawed at her rim like some sort of crazed woodland creature - maybe an effective method...but... If you have arthritis or some similar physical challenge, forget about it, you may want to have a family member roll your rim for you (more disgust..."er, Gramma, almost have it, kinda hard, my fingers keep slipping on your lipstick stains"). Maybe that is the sign of a true friend, somebody you can ask to help you move AND/OR somebody who you would ask to roll up your rim.

Second, how do you actually carry around a winning rim - in your wallet, purse pocket?...hey, there is something to look forward to fishing out later in the day!

Third, consider the Tim's employees who actually have to touch these sometimes wet, smelly, knawed bits of paper in order to redeem your donut or coffee. I notice the employees have likey said "enough is enough" and plastic rim-deposit boxes are appearing at Tim's outlets where you actually have to drop the rim bit, so the employee never has to touch it..."yes, it WAS the plasma t.v. whatdya mean you didn't see it, I just dropped it in, gimme my t.v.!".

Ya, "rrrroll up the rim to win" sound kinda silly and maybe even vaguely Scottish...but the appeal stops there. What's so wrong with scratch and win..."scrrrrrrratch and win"...?

I could go on, but my Tim's tea is getting cold and I need to limber up my fingers for when I finish : P

The slowest drive-thru in the world is Tim Hortons on the Alaska Highway at Fort St. John. You wait and wait to order in a long line of diesels and when you finally do get to the window they give you what ever they feel like. I say scrap the Roll up the Rim and hire more timwits.

RE: Tim Hortons: Roll up

I like the promotion though I think they should make it easier to open. Takes me like a minute or two to get the damned thing open just to see "Please Play Again".

:D . . . I'm just picturing that in my head right now. Would be funnier to see that in real life :D.

Yes, this is partially my view, promote fine. But, even if they perforated near the prize area of the rim to make it easier to roll, it is still a bit gross, no?

I also realize we are talking about a Canadian institution(s) here (Tim's and maybe even the rutr promotion) - but I wonder how many actually want their Canadian identity defined by soggy bits of coffee cup rim?

Am I the only idiot in the whole country that has not won so much as a timbit? Is this all a big scam? Does anybody know someone who knows someone who won anything?

I haven't won anything either. Everyone else I know always wins, but I'm always lucked out for some odd reason.

I won a cookie once. But threw the cup away. I hate clutter. Unless I win something worthwhile.......I ain't keeping a piece of garbage in my house.

hahah! oh God! You guys are too funny! Do you know how much fun I've had reading this post?   yeah, I've never won anything, but it was a pretty neat idea to put the words in the rim...I mean, who else could've thought of that, eh? but it is rather gross and yes it's VERY hard to roll it up, but it's a tradition now and it won't change...but  if it does change, perhaps, they can have something to peel off of the side of the cup!! oh man...you've all gotten me hungry for some Timbits...the last time I had those things was last summer when I was living with my boyfriend in Québec. He took me to Ontario too. Niagara Falls. :D well toods! 8)

PEI...for now
:? Yeaaaah, I spent a couple years working at Tim's. The chances of getting a doughnut or a cookie is slim as it is. I've averaged it out to about 10% chance of winning a pastry. Forget about the TV or Truck, the odds are about the same as the 649 but you don't get millions for getting picked 1 out of 100000000000000, and in the end you would've spent a $hitload on coffee.

So far I'm on a losing streak 100%, and I usually get a coffee once a day, and they all say Ree-Say-Ezz dammit.

Third, consider the Tim's employees who actually have to touch these sometimes wet, smelly, knawed bits of paper in order to redeem your donut or coffee
.

 That's true man, the quickest way to roll the win cup is with your teeth, just bite it and it rolls down easy. Now at the Drive thru we had to accept these gnawed, salavitated pieces of cardboard with our hands because we couldn't slow down our time. Yet If we had to give a timbit to a dog (happens alot), we weren't allowed to feed it to them. Go figger.

YES! Those TH executives are clever, they have our number Twila! "Why don't we come up with a "prize" campaign that is so repulsive, nobody will actually redeem the winnings". Well, Canadians SHOWED them! (which, incidentally is why Lotto 649 decided against proceeding with their "wipe away the dung" campaign" to boost lottery sales - industry secret..shhh). You know my thoughts on the rutr redemption issue, and I will add I have won twice this time around - donuts. I immediately pitched them in the garbage...don't get me going on donuts...

London Free Press: Business news that affects people in London, Ontario Canada ... Tim Hortons. I had no idea Tim's was a Canadian phenomenon, with more than 2,300 stores nationwide, and 66 here in London

We have become a society of convenience..

MY SELF INCLUDED!!

I spend on an average $6.00 a day at Tim's, just on coffee!! That does not include any bagels, soups, stews or anything else I choose to waste my hard earned money on that is overpriced and very convenient. The roll up the rim event never even enters into the picture for me, I never roll them up I have a travel mug that I use, I drive a tractor trailer so it's a 20 oz cup. I don't even accept the paper cup.

Every time I look at the 8 people lined up at the counter..Six people working behind that counter..One person serving the line, I scratch my head, get somewhat emotionally disraught and continue to stand in that line up..To pay $1.60 for a coffee I can make for $0.25...

It actually embarasses me to be a part of this behaviour...I'll be on my way shortly to grab a coffee.! At Tim's.!

Mr. Fitz...quite the thought provoking topic. Now I'm going to be thinking of your descriptive post (beaver style) everytime I roll up a rim or see others do so...

Question:
Does everyone here chew on the rim to roll it up??
I usually wait until the drink is finished then use two thumbs to roll it up. Of course this collapses the cup hence the reason you have to wait until after the drink is finished, but I find it works quite well.
Any other tips or techniques??

Somebody else's rant about Tim Hortons that I will pass on:

TIM HORTON'S RULES OF ENGAGMENT

The following is the OFFICIAL RULES OF ENGAGEMENT for Tim Horton's. Please feel free to pass them along so that we can make the world a better place.

1) When you enter a Tim Hortons and see a line to one side of the restaraunt that DOES NOT mean that you can start another line on the other side. PENALTY: TOO MANY LINES. People guilty of this infraction must buy coffee everyone in the original line.

2) If you cannot see the donut you want available in the display you CANNOT ask for it since the server will then go into the back and event ually return and tell you that - guess what - they don't have it! PENALTY: DELAY OF GAME. People guilty of this infraction must return to the end of the line.

3) The Drive-Thru is for ordering coffee and donuts ONLY. If you need to order a sandwich or soup get out of your car and go inside you lazy slob! It takes too long and they'll probably get your order wrong anyways so save some greenhouse emissions and remember - NO ORDERING FOOD IN THE DRIVE-THRU! PENALTY: OVER ORDERING. People guilty of this infraction will have their tires deflated on the spot.

4) Cleaning of the Hot Chocolate and Flavored Coffee machines is FORBIDDEN during times where there are actually customers in the store. What kind of business takes a product off-line in the middle of the day?! PENALTY: UNNECESSARY C LEANLINESS. Staff guilty of this infraction will be forced to eat hot, spicy food, then placed in restraints just out of the reach of a nice cool glass of water for a hour.

5) Placing the lids on the "to-go" cups so that the drink opening lines up with the crease in the cup is a crime against humanity since it has the same effect as gag dribble-cups. Plus, exactly how hard is it to miss that crease when placing the lid on anyways? Yet it seems to happen more than 50% of the time. PENALTY: ILLEGAL LID ON THE CREASE. Staff guilty of this must floss with barbed wire for a week.

6) Franchise owners who open up a store with a Drive-Thru that can't handle at least ten cars in line are a traffic menace. Caffiene addiction is a scary thing that will cause people to stop dead on busy streets just to keep a position in line at the Drive-Thru. PENALTY: INTERFERENCE. Owners guilty of this infraction will be forced to order their meals via the empty Wendy's Drive-Thru next door for a month.

7) Going on a coffee run to Tim's for five or more people is a non-starter. Firstly, you'll never remember what everyone ordered correctly. Secondly, you don't have a hope in hell of carrying that stuff back out to your car. Lastly, it will take too long!!! That nice person behind you in line was under the impression that you were just going to order your coffee and go. BUT NO, you have to take 5-10 minutes of our lives while your botch the order then juggle the cups back to your vehicle. Get some backbone - force others to come with you. No more than two orders per person thank you! PENALTY: OVER TWO MINUTE WARNING. People guilty of this infraction will be forced to drink ALL of the coffee they have ordered and eat ALL the food. &nbs p;Doing this same infraction via the Drive-Thru = public flogging.

8 During Roll-Up-The-Rim-To-Win time all cups left unattended and unrolled for more than one minute are free game to anyone else. Since we know that all the really good prizes are only meant for people in Ontario we've only got a limited shot at anything decent so watch your cups! PENALTY: INELIGIBLE ROLLER. People guilty of this infraction must forfiet any prizes won past or present to the new roller.

9) Staff who fail to recognize that you are a creature of habit and order the same thing everyday for over a year at the same Tim Horton's and still meet you with blank stares and an indifferent "What can I get you?" are inflicting an inhuman mental torture. Isn't that what the commercials are all about? Where are the smiles and a hearty "The usual, Bob?" PENALTY: INCOMPLETE RECOGNITION. Staff guilty of this infraction must be subjected to proof of indentity and a strip search every time they try to pick up their paycheck.

...and the final rule of engagement.

10) Showing up at you son/daughters hockey game with a coffee from another outlet than Tim Horton's is VERBOTTEN! What are you - some kind of troublemaker? Don't you know the way we do things around here? PENALTY: ILLEGAL COFFEE. People guilty of this must clean the ice with their tongues between periods.

Hopefully if all of Canada buys into these rules we'll have a safer, more productive society. Pass it on!!

:coffee:
