This is the story of Abu.

This is the story of primogeniture, alive and well in the present tense in the cradle of civilization, the Garden of Eden between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Babylon, the ancient Chaldea and their astronomers, and the cuneiform before old Assyria.

Abu means the "father of."

So when you hear Abu Mazen, the leader of Palestine (Hamas and Hezbollelah might object), you are not hearing the last name of the man, but rather the father's son's name.

So Abu Mazen, means the father of first son who is named Mazen.

Arafat is the western name, but by all Palestinians, he was known as the father of his first son, who by the way had died.

So this is the story of Abu.

The first son is so honored, and if the father still goes by the name of his dead first son, every time the name is uttered is but an honor and of deep feeling.

Contrast that to a scene in PULP FICTION.
Bruce Willis pops into a waiting taxi after he just killed a man in the boxing ring and won the fight when he was supposed to "throw it" and he says in answer to the female Latino taxidriver's question, "What does the name Butch mean? Honey,...in America, our names don't mean nuthin."
