In order to add some spunk to the download site, we'd like to know which software utilities you find the most useful. Some examples are as follows:

"I love winamp, use it every day! Great features and extremely fast"

"I can't live without the DivX player and codec. They rock!"

"AVG Antivirus rocks! Gets all the crap off my systems and sure beats Norton!"

(These are just examples)..

So what's one of your favourite programs and how does it make your life easier?

Photoshop is cool, especially in the hands of somebody who is really good with it. I just use it mostly for colour corrections etc...standard things that I used to do in a lab.

The program I like best and use most is WordPerfect. It is very intuitive and makes writing easy.

My other favourite is Mozilla. Not sure how I ever lived without tabbed browsing for all those years.

I do some graphics by my main gig is illustration. I don't use Photoshop a lot for drawing but I use it every day for something. Here's a few samples of what I do.

Wow ... You are extremely talented. I am impressed. Being confined to computer design I have a healthy respect (and perhaps a tinge of jealousy!) for people who can actually draw. Hats off to ya, Zed!

Thanks Cosmos :) I would really like to try the latest Wacom Tablet just to see how good it is. I've tried the older ones and they were kind of like a novelty. Couldn't really compete with the traditional methods of drawing but they are getting better.

The most useful software I have is free. There are fully functional freeware replacements available for the MS Office suite (which is not cheap), and Photoshop (which is *really* not cheap), plus much more secure browsers and email clients than anything you can buy, and a lot of other stuff, including operating systems. Though I should point out that Linux is free only if your time is worth nothing. There's a useful set of links to a bunch of this stuff at:

http://clubweb.interbaun.com/mward/gmc/freesw.html

The guy who maintains that page is an instructor at a community college in Edmonton that I've known for many years. He put it up for his students, who can't afford to shell out the $hundreds for commercial software packages, but I'm sure he'd be happy if you all looked at it too. I use all that stuff regularly, and I can assure you it all works very nicely.

Zed, good stuff!

The most useful and favourite software for me is, by a long way, good old Quark. If I could only have one program, that would be it. Sure the company sucks with its inability to keep up with the times, its ridiculously high prices, and its obsessive measures to prevent piracy, but Xpress remains the best page-layout program going.

PS Dex, wow, thanks for the great link!

You can watch over 300 (all working, unlike other software!!) world wide internet tv channels without any extra device. All you need is this software and the internet connectiont. I've been using Grisoft's AVG since it came out and I love to hear people complain about Norton and McAfee with all the problems they have. But today I have just tried the Opera browser and I love the speed and organization offered by this alternative to IE.
