The Influence of France in Québec

Hi,

I’m a high school student from London, England and as part of my French exam next month I have to present an oral presentation on “The Influence of France in Québec”.

I’ve had little problem finding information on the history of Québec, however I’ve had trouble finding internet resources explaining the Québécois culture today, and how France influences it (if at all). Having never visited Québec it is hard to get an idea of what the culture is like, so any help would be hugely appreciated!

These are some questions I’ve had trouble finding information on:

--How is France perceived in Québec?

--Are the majority of schools in Québec French? Are children taught in French? Do they have to learn English?

--What are the main industries in Québec? Is the business language French? Or do many people speak in English?

--Is there a lot of American influence in Québec?

--What is the media like? Are TV stations/newspapers/magazines etc. in French or English?

--Is the culture influenced by France at all?

--Do you think Québec plays a significant part in the French-speaking world?

--Are there any particular French influences in Québec (aside from the language)?

--Are there connections tourism-wise with France? Do a lot of French people visit Québec and vice-versa? Are there any statistics for this?

--Is there anything else I should know about Québec and/or its relationship with France and the French?


If anyone could help me out and answer one or more of these questions I would be so grateful, also if you know of any good websites I should look at they would be much appreciated too!

At least, I can answer to this question. Media is used in both languages. In TV channels you can watch in English or in French. Some channels even show the same things in both languges (in different times of course) such as "discovery channel", "history", and "meteo media" and sport channels. About the newspapers: French newspapers are more widely known, and distributed because English people live only (mostly) in westren island of Montreal. "Journal de Montreal", "la Presse" are well know French newspapers, "the Gazette" is English newspaper. In addition, in metro the dayly, freely distibuted newspapers are "Metro" and "24 Heurs" in French of course.

mostly french but some inglish areas not just west MTL but easterntownships too.

well we speakit better than the French do because we use less english words than they do

don't know about stats but they love to go skidoing up north.

The working language is French, business in the borders of Quebec in French but as soon as you do business outside of Quebec it is in English. I worked for a company who did business in 64 countries and the language was English. Most of the English here speack French, we have our English schools however the French who speak English is a low percentage only because the English taught in their schools was lousy but it has improved alot in the past few years. Hope this hels a bit.

They aren't really as liked or loved like most people think they should be. Most Quebecers don't like watching French television and have their own culture, movies, dubs, television programs, newspapers.

They are in French. There are English schools and just link English-speaking students throughout Canada must learn some French, French-speakers do the same thing with English.


--What are the main industries in Québec? Is the business language French? Or do many people speak in English?
Industries can range from anything to anything. Hydroelectricity is a big moneycow for Quebec. Business can be conducted in both languages but you'll find most Quebec-firms conduct business in French inside the offices.

--Is there a lot of American influence in Québec?
Sure there is. There's nowhere in the world without atleast some American influence.

--What is the media like? Are TV stations/newspapers/magazines etc. in French or English?
Both and both.

--Is the culture influenced by France at all?
Not at all. Though you may be able to get some yummy croissants in the morning on your way to work.

--Do you think Québec plays a significant part in the French-speaking world?
Yes. It is home to the second largest French speaking city in the world and Montreal was/sort of still is a hub of business. Quebec is responsable for a lot of cultural and technological exports. Probably the world's largest manufacturers of Trains/Trams/Rapid Transit, Bombardier, is Quebecois.

--Are there any particular French influences in Québec (aside from the language)?
Again, not so much.

--Are there connections tourism-wise with France? Do a lot of French people visit Québec and vice-versa? Are there any statistics for this?
Yes. There are a lot of French living in Quebec, but in my experience, they return to France usually less in less than 3 years after moving to the province. THIS IS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ONLY! I've met a lot of Quebecers in Paris.

Again, there is less of a connection than you might think between France and Quebec these days.

When the good people of France realized the Nazis were'nt going to be stopped by wishing them away...half of them surrendered.... Quebec has followed that lead...

Anyone disagreeing with the language police with the crooks hanging on the coattails of the Liberal Party....with charging a fee for electricity lines that carry someone else's product to the marketplace ...they just surrender.... Hey now that's what the rest of Canada can claim as the great binding similarity...a camraderie of stupidity with Quebec...

If you realy want to find some influence of France in Quebec, i suppose there is a slight difference in the private law.

Religion is not very interrring but i suppose that the cathocism (if there is still any...) come from France but there is no real influence today.

A prime minister coming from France has declare that Quebecers are now american people and French are europeen people and it's a big difference.

some guy have put this in a mathematical sentence something like -F + GB +usa² -R = Q

meaning less french that you think, more english (GB for Great Britain), very american less cathollic (R = Rome)

It still ticks me off to no end. Canadians died for France in 2 world wars.

There was a larger number of French Canadians from quebec than English shirking going into those two wars and it was a bit of a joke in english Quebec.

For me i think that Quebecers are canadians and some canadians have been very brave, some want to travel, some want money, some were totally scared. I can't tell in wich group i could have been.

I suppose there is no difference in the bravery for french blood or english blood, hundred of years of battle said so...

Why not just say English and French are two great people ?

In all honesty as i stated it was a bit of a joke in English Quebec.
Now that you mention it,I being English, although me mom's absentee(no gripe here with him, Nanny had a BF is all) dad was French Canadain,so my "Stats" could well be just that...English Quebec inuendo....but hmmmmmm i dunno it was pretty heady stuff in argument sometimes..

My Grandfather on me dad's side was half French and half Italian....So please as I talk like this harsh Anglais it's not based in some prejudice...I try to be honest and as this post shows ...i apologise for the unstastical fairness with my original statement....
