RE: The Ghost of Machiave

The thing is that Iraq shows no signs of being better off under US rule and it is doubtful that Iraq will be any better off when a puppet regime backed by the US military is in place.

It's a recipe for creating another dictatorship, another Hussein.

I don't believe they lied.

All governments lie from time to time. The US has a long history of lying governments. The Bushies have pushed lying to a steady stream. The invasion of Iraq was planned by the Bushies long before Bush was even chosen to run for President. Control of Iraq is essential for American control of the middle east. And, yes, it's mostly about oil. It always has been. The rest is lies. Even Sadaam was a minor player in this. He didn't matter. Sadaam snubbed his nose at the US and they had to destroy him like a bug. Sure he was a thug, but most of what you heard about him was lies.

I don't believe they lied. I believe they believed the weapons were there at a time.

I think it's to far of a reach to believe that there wasn't someone knowingly lying given the quantity and detail of the information that was being presented prior to the invasion.

Besides, invading a country with the foreknowledge that thousands of people will die as a result (both combatants and non-combatants) is one of those decisions you make knowing you are doing the right thing for the right reason. There is no room for error. The US was the aggressor here. If thier evidence wasn't rock solid, it should have been.

It is still a very good thing that Sadam is out of power though. That you can't argue.

I won't argue that Saddam was a bad guy. That the Iraqis are better off with him and his brood out of power is another thing. I don't know if the killing was ever occuring on the scale it is now with the US and it's coalition in power there. Perhaps I will agree if things ever calm down over there, but there certainly is no sign that is going to happen anytime soon. As far as democracy/elections goes: it will be very questionable if the results of the upcomming elections is a clear reflection of the will of the Iraqi people.

I'll come half-way. Perhaps it is a good thing that Saddam is out of power; however, I don't think that it's a good thing that the US is in power there.
