There will be some who say "Oh it's those greedy corrupt Liberals that are responsible for XYZ..."

Some will say "Fat-Cat Conservative governments behave just the same as Liberal governments..."

We frequently hear and read comments and perspectives from folk who suggest that the need for Canadian Forces folk to travel to Afghanistan and die on our behalf is demonstration of a commitment by our government to safeguard freedom and is consistent with the wishes of the Canadian people....

So when it comes to spending money and spilling blood, the Canadian government is keenly aware of public sentiment and has the pulse of the nation under its finger....

Meanwhile Canadian's working part time jobs (frequently more than one) are required to pay into the Employment Insurance fund but are ineligible for benefits.....

There is currently a "paper" surplus of some forty billion dollars sitting in the EI books but it's more than likely that this forty+billion doesn't exist as capital assets because both Liberal and Conservative governments have plowed this "surplus" into general revenues....hence this wad of cash is now only a line entry in the books....

Canadians are dying in one corner of the world to "protect democracy and safeguard 'freedom' " while other Canadians are having their quality of life and future potential stolen by successive Canadian governments.

Why aren't people upset about this?

Perhaps it's because it isn't "real" for the average Canadian...

The idea that a quantity of virtual money exists in some virtual treasury that's been collected by some virtual government with virtual integrity isn't nearly as impactful as weeping family members collecting the remains of some young Canadian sacrificed to protect our virtual freedom and virtual democracy....

Some very good points Mike, I agree Canada has allowed Politicians to much control over everyday Canadian lives ergo National ID cards what's next are the Feds going to Chip me like I did my dog. Regarding UI in Nova Scotia a seasonal worker use to have to work said number of weeks a year to draw the poggy but with the decline in fish stocks ergo less weeks worked some genuis decided to use a quota system thus allowing fisherpersons to qualify on catch limits (confused yet) so a fisherperson can qualify for UI benifits after working ONE day-yes I'm serious he only has to haul in his quota limit and he/she is on easy street. The lower income workers as you stated have to work two or three jobs pay into UI but never reap the benifits, like most social safty net programs in Canada very few low to middle income Canadians will ever be "Allowed" to use them thus ensuring a life time of abuse for the few who know how to work the system. Free medical care? Sure up to a point but we in NS pay for all dental and prescription drugs, only those on Welfare qualify for "Free" services. Seniors are charged fees to get subsidized drug and dental plan. Those in the MIlitary pay into a military pension and CPP but when they reach the age to draw CPP the Feds claw back their Military Pension (also know as double dipping) so in effect they paid into a program they will never get to "really" use. Military and RCMP members pay into UI for say 20 to 30 years how many ever get to benifit from it?

The previous Federal Governments closed Mental Hospitals and small option homes with no plan to re-house or train those with a mental illness, thus now our prisons and streets are over flowing with the Mentally Ill, a health issue was passed off to Policing Agencies who aren't trained to deal with the mentally ill nor is it their job. This problem is pandemic but is Government looking into the issue? NO, why I'd guess the poor and the Mentally Ill are not priorities of Government regardless of party color.

So yes you are correct our Troops in Afghanistan are shedding blood so the Afghan people have freedom while Canadians are living on the street with a Mental Illness or being worked to death working mulitiple jobs just to eat. Canada Politicians need to start taking care of all Canadians, not just the chosen.

Thanks for letting me rant.
