The Daleks Updated 20/08/2005
Who are they?
The Daleks are the greatest alien enemies ever encountered by the Doctor. They are robot machines that are directed by the mutated remains of the Khaled race inside them. Their home planet is Skaro.
The Dalek machine
The Dalek is about 5’6” to 5’9” tall. They have a single eye at the end of a stalk, a telescoping left arm ending in a plunger (or mechanical claw) and a right arm that is actually a directed energy weapon. The machine casing is made of Dalekanium (or, maybe, polycarbide depends who you listen to!) and resistant to small arms fire. There is a small plate below the eye that has an identification mark so that individual Daleks can be recognised.
The Dalek creature can be taken from its travelling machine but it is still vicious and will attack humans. However, taken from the environment of its mechanical suit, it will not survive for long.
Daleks are not stopped by stairways as commonly assumed as they can levitate. The joke runs: “Real Daleks don’t climb stairs, they level the building.”
They have a harsh mechanical voices and are inclined to chant “Exterminate!” in a manical fashion.
The word “Dalek” means “far and distant thing” is Serbo-Croatian but this is just a coincidence.
Their mission
The Daleks are dedicated to conquering the universe and dominating all races. They want to stamp their conformity on all life. They see themselves as the supreme race in the universe and other races are to be exterminated or enslaved. They are ruthless and lacking in compassion. They are single-minded and claim to be logical but they still have some traces of emotion although their genetic-modification is supposed to have removed all emotion except hatred. They seem to have some sort of legal process as there have been trials conducted on Skaro. There is even a suggestion that Daleks can appreciate poetry! The Daleks have the technology to travel through time making them even more difficult to defeat.
The Daleks are ruled by a Supreme Dalek but they were created by the Khaled (Humanoid Dalek) chief scientist (and dangerous psychopath) Davros.
They established a vast interplanetary empire but they, too, have their enemies. Chief of these were the Movellans who are a race of androids and their fleet and the Daleks proved to be evenly matched. Another powerful foe of the Daleks were the Mechanoids. However, it is said that the Daleks conquered 70 planets in the Ninth Galactic System and 40 planets in the Constellation of Minos. There have even been different factions of the Daleks that have fought against one another. For example, both Davros and the Supreme Dalek (aka the Emperor Dalek) have had Dalek followers.
Dalek history
It is difficult to relate Dalek history with any certainty as both the Daleks and the Doctor have travelled forward and back in time and changed the timeline. However, they originated on the planet Skaro which was split into two warring factions - the Kaleds and the Thals. Both races were humanoid in their appearance. They fought a war lasting a thousand years and towards its end one of the Kaled scientists, Davros, developed the Dalek machine to house mutated Kaled creatures. They were to be a devastating army of brutal killers to be used to wipe out all other lifeforms.
The war ended when the Thals exploded a neutron bomb and virtually decimated the planet. Just before this a group of Daleks escaped in a spacecraft leaving behind a weaker strain of themselves trapped in the Kaled city that they could not leave. The escaping Daleks are those that invaded Earth on more than one occasion and established their evil empire. During their war with the Movellans, the Daleks return to Skaro to find Davros as they believe he can help them achieve victory. Davros aids them but is captured and then rescued by a faction of the Daleks. The Daleks split into two camps - those that follow Davros and those that remain loyal to the Emperor Dalek. These two armies of Daleks wage war on one another as well as the rest of the Universe. The Doctor uses the Hand of Omega to destroy Skaro in the Earth year 1963 but, of course, there were many Daleks elsewhere in the cosmos. This is all before the events of the Time War.
