The best late-night convention comedy, from Stephen Colbert to Samantha Bee

We’ll just come right out and say it: Stephen Colbert came out on top after two weeks of convention coverage. But he was also in really good company — and we don’t just mean Jon Stewart. Here’s a look at some of the funniest, most insightful and most blistering late-night coverage of the Republican and Democratic conventions, and a hint as to who to follow this election season:

“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”

“The Late Show” had two weeks of live shows during the conventions, and Colbert seemed to be having the time of his life. He sang. He reunited with Stewart — and his alter-ego Stephen Colbert of “The Colbert Report” fame (though Viacom, the parent company of Comedy Central, reportedly squashed any future appearances). He also recruited Laura Benanti to do a pitch-perfect impersonation of Melania Trump.

Recurring appearances by Stewart (one of “The Late Show’s” executive producers) haven’t hurt either. The resignation of Fox News CEO Roger Ailes — amid a host of sexual harassment allegations against the network’s founder — brought Colbert’s former “Daily Show” boss out for 13 minutes of nostalgia.

“Full Frontal With Samantha Bee”

The “Full Frontal” host is Canadian by birth, but her weekly takes on U.S. politics are not to be missed. Bee upped the ante for the RNC, where she hosted a half-hour special, in addition to her usual Monday night show. Bee traveled to Cleveland in a Herman Cain-branded bus and her correspondents beat the pavement, interviewing RNC attendees who had some interesting things to say about “Black Lives Matter,” or, well, just watch:

I never wonder why these "comedy" shows are late-night.
