Sweden has won this year's Eurovision Song Contest, pipping Russia and Italy to victory - with celebrity chef Nigella Lawson dealing the fatal blow to runner-up Russia when she announced the UK was awarding the Scandinavians a maximum 12 points.

Heartthrob Mans Zelmerlow, a 28-year-old singer and television presenter, won with the catchy electro-pop ballad Heroes, which he performed alongside a clever projected animation.

It is Sweden's sixth Eurovision win and their second in four years and moves them above the UK, Luxembourg and France (with 5 wins each) into second place in the number of wins table, below Ireland (with 7 wins).

Sweden won most recently in 2012 with Euphoria by Loreen and now gets to host the contest again next year. They finished with 365 points, 62 points more than second-placed Russia, who looked as though they were going to win it at one point. Italy finished third and Belgium fourth.

Australia was in the spotlight as the competition's special anniversary guest.
Represented by Guy Sebastian, they finished a brilliant fifth, getting ten points from the UK (although the Aussies didn't give the British any points).

But it was the UK's entry, Electro Velvet, which set tongues wagging for all the wrong reasons. The UK secured just five points overall and only scored higher than France, Germany and Austria. France got four points, whereas Germany and hosts and last year's winner Austria both got no points each.
