CHILLIWACK, B.C. (CP) - A police SWAT team has blocked off a road in Chilliwack, B.C., due to an apparent hostage-taking.
Witnesses say armed officers have had the Comfort Inn in the Fraser Valley community, about 100 kilometres east of Vancouver, surrounded since last night.
Radio station CKNW reports the man is armed and could have as many as four people in the room with him, and that police are negotiating with him.
One man who works in a nearby restaurant says the hotel has been evacuated and a dozen marked and unmarked police vehicles surround it.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, says a police officer told him the incident involves a fugitive who's wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and is believed to be armed and dangerous.
Chilliwack RCMP have not confirmed the incident.
