TORONTO (CP) - A police investigation is underway into a suspected tampering of Christie Chewy Chunks Ahoy! cookies that are being recalled.
Kraft Canada Inc. recently received several reports from customers who found small, sharp metal objects in select packages of cookies. The company immediately contacted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and police after it was suspected the product may have been tampered with at Kraft's Toronto plant.
Spokeswoman Lynne Galia says the products would have been distributed in Ontario and Quebec.
While the bulk of affected cookies never left the plant, Galia says the company's sales team is working with distributors to get the products off store shelves.
No other products have been affected, nor have any serious injuries been reported.
"Kraft's most important responsibility is consumer and product safety," Galia said.
"We would not allow any product to be sold if we believed it posed a health or safety risk."
She said the company is treating the case as a "potential tampering" because "the material found in the cookies is not found in our plant."
For more information, consumers are asked to contact Kraft at 1-800-310-3704.
