Woman offended by doc's obesity advice

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ROCHESTER, N.H. -- As doctors warn more patients that they should lose weight, the advice has backfired on one doctor with a woman filing a complaint with the state saying he was hurtful, not helpful.

Dr. Terry Bennett says he tells obese patients their weight is bad for their health and their love lives, but the lecture drove one patient to complain to the state.

"I told a fat woman she was obese," Bennett says. "I tried to get her attention. I told her, 'You need to get on a program, join a group of like-minded people and peel off the weight that is going to kill you.' "

He says he wrote a letter of apology to the woman when he found out she was offended.

Her complaint, filed about a year ago, was initially investigated by a panel of the New Hampshire Board of Medicine, which recommended that Bennett be sent a confidential letter of concern. The board rejected the suggestion in December and asked the attorney general's office to investigate.

Bennett rejected that office's proposal that he attend a medical education course and acknowledge that he made a mistake.

Bruce Friedman, chairman of the board of medicine, said he could not discuss specific complaints. Assistant Attorney General Catherine Bernhard, who conducted the investigation, also would not comment, citing state law that complaints are confidential until the board takes disciplinary action.

The board's Web site says disciplinary sanctions may range from a reprimand to the revocation of all rights to practice in the state.

"Physicians have to be professional with patients and remember everyone is an individual. You should not be inflammatory or degrading to anyone," said board member Kevin Costin.

Other overweight patients have come to Bennett's defense.

"What really makes me angry is he told the truth," Mindy Haney told WMUR-TV on Tuesday. "How can you punish somebody for that?"

Haney said Bennett has helped her lose more than 150 pounds, but acknowledged that she initially didn't want to listen.

"I have been in this lady's shoes. I've been angry and left his practice. I mean, in-my-car-taking-off angry," Haney said. "But once you think about it, you're angry at yourself, not Doctor Bennett. He's the messenger. He's telling you what you already know."

I just ask that if I ever become obese that mr. manda point it out by chasing me around with a harpoon screaming that he's trying to get the whale...do you think that that approach may have been more appropriate?

The woman would have sued him for millions with a remark like that! God, I can't believe what people will do, what was she thinking?? If a doctor can't even give medical advice now without being called up for not being more delicate, or whatever it is she wanted him to be, what hope?

Perhaps he could have suggested that they don't build scales like they used to, so to prevent hers from going on stress leave, she may want to consider the scales feelings and lose a few pounds? :?

I bet if he offered to pay for the liposuction she would have been all over it like a fat chick on a cupcake!

 Or he could have said, "Gosh, you know, you really are such a thin woman. Still, if you were to exercise, it would be good just because the old heart (not that I'm suggesting your heart is old!!) likes a bit of a workout. And maybe you could eat less too... no! no! no! not because you're FAAAAAAT, but because too much food can cause... ummm, pimples. Yeah, that's it, pimples."

Or when she was being called into the examination room, the nurse could have called out "hey you! Yeah, the chubby chick with the face full o candy" that would have gotten her attention...nyuck, nyuck, nyuck

And no, for all ot those who love to attack people, i do not have anything against obese people, I used to weigh 170 myself...not no mo, you can tell by the pic, but I don't discriminate, I make fun of everyone equally! :D

Ditto, Manda. And besides, my focus is making fun of that particular woman, not even remotely because she's fat but because she is stupid as all get out.

It occurred to me (in the middle of the night when such things always manage to wake me in order to occur to me) that my comments in this thread were insensitive. I should point out that I am far from skinny myself. Although this thread was meant to be an attack on specifically that woman who chose to go after the doctor for speaking the truth, it veered a bit, and somehow slipped from funny down into insensitive. I really don't laugh at fat people, and so I am sorry that in this case, it comes across that I do.

Good God. "Obese" is a defined medical term, and the AMA has a set of guidelines as to what is considered obese.

I cannot for the life of me understand why it is offensive to be told you're obese. Next thing you know, you won't be allowed to use the terms "male" or "female" or "alive" or "dead"....

Fecking amurcans, man. Always looking to sue somebody over some foolishness.

One of my personal dislikes is fat women. I just find them repulsive. So,watching that spokesperson for the National Fat Chicks Assn on Larry King laying into that Dr. was disgusting!
