MONTREAL — Three stray cats have been found burned with hot oil since winter in Laval, Que., an animal shelter owner says.
Animal-rescuers are nursing the disfigured cats back to health.
Johanne Bernier, who runs an animal refuge in the city northwest of Montreal, says the same woman dropped off the cats over the past few months.
“When I saw the burns at the vet, I had tears in my eyes,” Bernier told QMI Agency.
The refuge owner said the third cat arrived two weeks ago.
“It was terrible,” said Bernier, who says she plans to file a police complaint. “He was dehydrated. The vet saw that even the gums were (burned).
The cat’s teeth were so loose they had to be removed. The veterinarian also shaved the animal, which exposed deep skin burns.
The woman who found the burned cats preferred not to give her name but told QMI the felines were in agony.
“The first cat came to my house...it was 35 C outside and it was soaked,” she said. “That’s when I smelled oil. It smelled so strong that burned my eyes.”
She distributed photos of the cats on social media.
Several users identified a man who allegedly boasted on the web about hating stray cats that entered his yard and mentioned “solving the problem in his own way.”
The burned cats have been adopted.
