...or chinese hackers, or ladders or union doods did. whatever. TTC = Take The Car.

It's always "rush hour" in Toronto on weekdays, but Monday at 6:20am is still probably the worst time for the city's entire subway line to shut down in all directions.

That's what happened this morning, bringing the city's commute to a virtual standstill.
“We lost our communications between transit control and all of our subways and Scarborough RT line,” TTC’s Danny Nicholson explained. “For safety reasons, right now, we’ve ordered all vehicles to do a stop and stay while we look into what’s happened.”
Nicholson said they had also lost their ability to send out e-alerts to inform customers of service interruptions.
The shut down put added pressure on the city's streetcars and buses, which were otherwise unaffected. However, the TTC didn't deploy shuttle buses to any subway stations.

Torontonians turned to Twitter to express their frustrations, and #TTCFail quickly started trending.

Others expressed gratitude that Uber was still operating in the city despite pressure from cab companies and bureaucrats.

Some lost no time using the outage to promote products, services and causes.
The main subway lines reopened at 7:45am, but travellers were warned to expect longer than normal travel times.
The TTC estimates that it normally services approximately 1.6 million passengers a day.

anyway, the TTC subways are old and creaky, smell like pee, are incomparable to any real international public transit system, always have escalators down for repair and the PA system blows but hey, it's in a world-class city they tell us.

Actually, the new subway trains are very nice and there are no doors between the cars, it's just a many hundreds of meters long tube.
