One of Dr Who's companions will be killed off in the final episode of Dr Who this weekend, according to growing speculation among fans.

Dr Who and Rose

Hints dropped throughout the series suggest one of the Doctor's friends will die while fighting alongside the Time Lord.

Billie Piper, who plays Rose Piper, and Catherine Tate, who stars as Donna Noble, are the favourites to face the chop.

Torchwood's Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman, and Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen), his original companion for the 1970s, are unlikely to die as they are both filming new episodes for their own spin-offs.

The most feasible senario could see Donna fall victim to the evil Daleks and their creator Davros. Donna has been told throughout the series that she faces an uncertain fate.

But some fans even speculate that the Doctor, played by David Tennant, will not make it out alive.

Saturday's episode, called Journey's End, will also feature a host of former companions including Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones.

A spokeswoman for the show refused to rule out the rumours. She said: "We do not comment on future storylines."

Saturday's episode is seen as the parting shot for script writer and executive producer Russell T Davies who will leave the show after four special episodes next year.

He will hand over to Steven Moffat, the writer behind some of the most successful episodes of the sci-fi revival, for a new full series in 2010.

The episode will be screened on BBC One at 6.40pm on Saturday July 5.
