I can't believe no one mentioned Rush. :O

Rush - Lakeside Park

It's about Port Dalhousie in St. Catharines, Ontario, and the Victoria Day celebrations there (been there, done that, not as exciting as you'd think though.. unless maybe you're drunk at the time). I also like YYZ, seeing as how that's the airport code for Pearson International Airport. I grew up in Mississauga, so I flew out of that airport whenever I went w/ family on holidays, so it brings those memories to mind.

I also love The Guess Who's song "American Woman" because it's a classic anti-USA song by a great Canadian group.

As for songs that remind me of Canada, for the most part i like folks songs like "Ontario," "Nova Scotia," "British Columbia," "Donkey Ridin'," and others. I can post lyrics if you really want. hehe.

King of Spain by Moxy Früvous also reminds me of Canada, with its telltale mentions of SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) and Pizza Pizza. Let's not also forget "Bud the Spud (from the bright red mud)" by Stompin' Tom, a classic song about PEI.

Looking through my winamp playlist, I also love "Old Apartment" by Barenaked Ladies, 'cause it mentions Toronto ("a new house on the Danforth").

But apparently I can't think of enough songs. I found a site that lists a veritable TONNE of songs about Canada. :)

I once heard Casey Kasom call that an "ode to the beauty of American women" or some such crap. The really funny thing? It was in the mid eighties. It's not like he didn't have time to listen to the lyrics.

lol That's hilarious. For those of us more familiar w/ the song, we know that the "American Woman" is actually referring to the Statue of Liberty, and was as close as the Guess Who could get to saying "Uncle Sam, get away from me" without being *too* blunt. I also found it great that Mike Myers put it as a main song in his one Austin Powers movie, and it became a huge hit. Every American I spoke with acted like it was the best song ever.

I bit my tongue and snickered to myself, knowingly. ;)

Song For A Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot

But I'm partial to that song, since I first heard Lightfoot sing it at "The Riverboat" in Yorkdale.

You should hear the Guess Who doing "American Woman"on the Live At the Paramount record..the extended version with many antiUS statements! The single version was so clean it became a hit in the USA.

PEI...for now
I think a good song that evokes Canada (moreso in the west) is: "it's 40 below and I don't give a Fu*k"

I do like the "toronto song" by...I think it was three dead trolls in a baggie.

Whether you like his music or not,Stompin" Tom Connors is the most Pro Canadian performer we have. :D His " I Wouldn"t Trade A Million Dollars for A Single Maple Leaf" is a fine example.[I would trade one for far less :( ]

Can't expect them to diss their home town,eh? They're in the GREAT BIG BOOK OF CANADIAN HUMOUR by Jay Gould, with all the lyrics to this song

Oh wow. Some good ones listed, definitely The Hip, Stompin Tom, but there's one that I always think of:

Remember the theme song to that show "The Littlest Hobo" about the lassie-like dog that travelled all over the place saving people? I think it was Canadian...

the chorus was like "Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down... until tomorrow, I'll just keep movin on".

"There's a voice, that keeps on calling me. Down the road, is where I'll always be. Every stop I take, I'm making a friend. Can't stay for long, you turn around and I'm gone again. Maybe tommorow, I'll want to settle down. But until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on."

Holy shiest, I haven't seen that show for 10 years.... damn brain!

Stuck for now in Ohio
How about Farewell to Nova Scotia? It makes me cry everytime I hear it. And anything by Great Big Sea of course! Whenever I hear Roy Johnstone's Devil's Jig CD it puts me right back on PEI, driving through the rain...the salt air...the peaceful loneliness of the island. And of course: Natalie MacMaster! She could be from nowhere but Cape Breton; Fiddle and Bow (sung by Bruce Guthro) off her No Boundaries CD sends shivers down my spine. If her music doesn't invoke Nova Scotia, no one's possibly can.

Did anyone mention Blue Rodeo?
Western Skies (Lost Together CD):

Well I'd rather be
Walking through the tall pine trees
High
Up above Lake Louise
And I'd rather be
Chasing after shooting stars
Than waiting for this dumb 503 TTC
I'd like to see
The sun set behind Saddle Mountain
And listen to the wind whisper my name
Yea this world and me don't fit
One of us is going to have to quit
Oh how I miss those western skies

And I'd rather be
Back in the Rocky Mountains
Than sitting in some bar on Queen St.
And I'd rather be
Walking through the high meadow
Than watching the latest war on my TV
So please don't you stand in my way
I just got to get out of this place
If I waste another day
I'm sure the sun will forget my name
Oh how I miss those western skies
Oh to see the sunset in her eyes
Oh to see the sunshine in her eyes

And I'd rather be
Lying by the Bow River
Just watching the clouds go by
Yea I'd rather be
Anywhere else than here tonight
Than stuck in the city
But through the pain
Good things will come
After the rain the sun
But that don't mean much to me
Stuck in the city
Oh how I miss those western skies
