I read a bit more about it and learned that because these people were raised in poverty with little hope of ever getting out of that poverty, they may have looked at life in terms of "nothing to lose". Studies were done on what combination of factors led to this group of people functioning as they did, and it seems the main factors were that they were a hopeless group of people manipulated by one strong personality and an extreme fear of becoming the next victim.

When the Panama story broke, I was a surprised that the couple got away with as much as they did - I guess Panama can be a bit lawless. I remember the story at the time was that the last victim's dog more or less led people to the murder scene.

The criminals from North Carolina tried to take an Island from a couple that were separated. The husband and her family knew that she would never sell the Island, so they knew something was wrong. I think she had a doberman that kept going to the property where she was buried ... crying or trying to lead people there. All the victims were shot in the back of the head and then the NC couple assumed the property. They had bank card information and signed deeds, so it looks like the victims knew what was coming ... they just didn't realize how ruthless the couple was, especially since they hosted parties that made them seem like a nice couple - although a bit wild and odd.
