Should governments limit holiday pay?

With all of the talk about adding another public holiday, I'm thinking that that could get expensive. If we must expand the number of state holidays, then why not place a limit on holiday pay to any day less the nine you get off.

One advantage of this is that it could allow the government to add as many state holidays as it wants without imposing any additional financial burden on private businesses. for example, let's say the government expands the number of state holidays to thirty but says an individual worker is allowed to choose nine of those days off per year in consultation with his employer. As long as his employer gives him nine days off a year, then the employer could treat any other state holiday on which that worker works as just a regular work day for him. Only if the employer gives him fewer than nine stat days a year off would it then need to pay extra. this could actually save an employer money since it could just give its worker a different day off rather than pay the extra money. While this could mean a little less money for the worker, at least he's more likely to get a day off that others get off too if he plans on organizing activities etc. So he loses some money but gets a better social life. As for the employer, he just saves some money due to more scheduling flexibility to avoid the extra holiday cost.

meh, my employer can afford it without a problem. Plus I volunteer to work every stat anyway for the extra money. If smaller employers can’t afford it - well they can’t afford the cost of doing business then.

Not everyone 'volunteers.' Think emergency and travel services to name just a few. Some of them might appreciate being able to get an alternative day off with others on which they could organize different social activities.

shift work is quite common nowadays. That's where I can see an advantage to a longer list of statutory holidays from which a worker can choose.
