Federal civil servant William Elliott has been named the new RCMP commissioner to fill the post vacated last December by Giuliano Zaccardelli, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said Friday.
William Elliott acknowledged that, as a civilian, he will face challenges running the RCMP.

The high-level bureaucrat was considered a frontrunner for the job in the lead-up to the announcement, along with two deputy RCMP commissioners, Bill Sweeney and Pierre-Yves Bourduas.
He is the first civilian to become RCMP commissioner. Elliott served as a former national security adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, as well as former prime minister Paul Martin.
Zaccardelli resigned last December after admitting he gave incorrect testimony on the Maher Arar affair to a Commons committee.
