Sen. Lynn Beyak is in hot water again.
The Senate ethics committee says the former Rainy River, Ont., realtor should be suspended again for talking back in her sensitivity training class, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
An instructor said while Beyak was awarded an Indigenous Awareness certificate, she was a poor student.
“Further education and training is warranted,” said the committee in a Jan. 31 report.
“The importance of education and training in this matter is paramount.”
Beyak completed an eight-hour online course and attended training sessions at the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres in Toronto over two days in June and August.
Instructors, who complained Beyak was unprepared and argumentative, quoted her as saying: “There is no racism in the northern areas of Ontario where I live”, that “she wanted to ‘move forward’ and not be ‘stuck in the past’”, and that “taxpayer dollars are being ‘wasted’ by having statutes removed and streets renamed” for Indigenous reconciliation.
The senator’s lawyer says the instructors have mischaracterized his client.
Beyak was suspended May 9 from getting her $153,900-a-year salary after she posted 129 letters on her website, including five that were deemed racist.
After she apologized and took a mandatory sensitivity training course, Beyak was put back on the payroll last Sept. 11.
