I know very little about Weinberger's work in the government, but it seems to me that upon his death respect might have been shown and personal vendetta withheld.

The Americans saved France's ass 3 times. WW1, WW2 and the Cold War WW3.
Gratitude was never an attribute of Frenchmen.
Reagan saved France's ass in WW3. He should not have bothered.
