Police arrested two teenagers accused of ransacking the family home of Tyler Eklund, a 14-year-old boy who was recently paralyzed in a snowboarding accident.
Two Bend boys, ages 14 and 15, were arrested Monday night. They were taken to the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with burglary and theft, said Lt. Ken Mannix of the Bend Police Department. Mannix said the boys had items that were taken from the home Sunday.
Mannix declined to specify the items, but Marty Michelson, who is staying at the house while Mike and Sue Eklund stay with their only son at a Nevada hospital, said an expensive skateboard, which belonged to one of Tyler's friends, was missing.
"All I can honestly tell you is that they just totally ransacked the house, went through everything, dumped every drawer, every cabinet, they even went through (Tyler's mother's) desk, just everything," Michelson told The Bulletin newspaper of Bend.
Tyler Eklund has been in intensive care since April 1, when he broke his neck during practice for a national snowboarding competition at Truckee, Calif.
Detectives working on an earlier burglary near the Eklunds' home suspected that the crimes might be related, Mannix said. It's unclear if the boys know the Eklund family.
