Report: U.S. Will Sell Israel Smart Bombs

Sep 21, 2:19 AM (ET)

JERUSALEM (AP) - The United States will sell Israel nearly 5,000 smart bombs in one of the largest weapons deals between the allies in years, the Haaretz newspaper reported Tuesday.

The deal could face political controversy since Israel has used such bombs in fighting with the Palestinians, the daily said. In one such instance in July 2002, a one-ton bomb meant for a senior Palestinian militant also killed 15 civilians in an attack in the Gaza Strip.

The deal is worth $319 million and was revealed in a Pentagon report made to the U.S. Congress a few weeks ago, Haaretz said. Funding for the sale will come from the U.S. military aid to Israel.

The bombs include airborne versions, guidance units, training bombs and detonators. The bombs are guided by an existing Israeli satellite used by the military.

As part of the deal, Israel will receive 500 one-ton bombs that can destroy two-yard concrete walls, 2,500 one-ton bombs, 1,000 half-ton bombs and 500 quarter-ton bombs, the daily said.

The Pentagon wants through the deal to maintain Israel's military advantages and ensure U.S. strategic and tactical interests, Haaretz said.

In addition to American bombs, Israel has used U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets in several killings of senior Palestinian militants whom Israel accused of overseeing attacks in the four years of fighting.

They don't need any of this stuff to attack Palestinians, Moghrabi. They already have more than enough for that. I think something else is going on.

That's a bunker buster, almost certainly depleted uranium. Some of these are likely destined for Palestine, as part of their campaign of "targeted assassination" of Palestinian political figures. As you know targeted assassination is against international law. So is the use of weapons of mass destruction, which du weapons undoubtedly are.

The U.S. is such a giving place. Israel has the right to have these dangerous weapons. Anybody else.... Shoot them.

An analyst on CBC Radio said the bombs will likely be used against Iran if they continue to develop nukes.

Things are going to get very hot in the next few years.

It's going to be a bumpy ride indeed.

Israel already has a history of acting unilaterally against countries that are developing nuclear programs. Israel is also a strong ally for the US. Now, Iran is stating unequivocally that they will not abandon their nuclear program. I smell a strategic strike with a follow up "house cleaning" by the US.

Britain has been backing away from such action though, as has most of the coalition of the bullied and bribed. That leaves the US and Israel in a tough spot. Problem is that I'm not sure that either Bush or Sharon is bright enough to see the implications.

I think Iran will react differently than Iraq when it was attacked. The Israelis might be surprised.
