British Columbia writer Jane Rule, considered a pioneer of lesbian-themed novels and non-fiction and an advocate for gay rights, has died at age 76. Her novel Desert of the Heart, published in 1964, was one of the first fiction works in Canada to portray a same-sex relationship.
