The Honourable Ralph Klein, the Premier of Alberta, has announced his intention to resign by October of 2007, at which point a four-month leadership contest is to take place, and a new leader would be sworn-in as the premier of the province by Spring of the next year.

 My Opinion

It's—it's finally h-happening? Oh ... oh my ... oh—oh m-my God ...

No the Conservatives are out the door after Ralph. With this infighting already I am surprised they wouldn't pull each other apart at this leaders convention.

Good bye Conservatives, and when they fall, hello NDP. :D

hmmm....mixed feelings on Klein. His first two terms are Premier of Alberta were great, but the last few years seem to be uninspired. In the last provincial election in 2004 it seemed he diden't even campaign, as he knew he would win anyways. But it did hurt him and he lost a few seats. Meh, its up in the air now one know for sure who the next Alberta premier will be.

Unless the next PC premier is exceptional, theres a good chance this Albertan will be voting for the Alliance.

Hank C, I am quite uninformed by way of politics in Alberta; if you would be so gracious, could you please blurb each of the parties in Alberta [that have a chance of being represented in the next Parliament], like, whether they are left-wing, right-wing or centrist, et cetera? :)

The NDP doesn't stand a chance.
A Conservative will be the next Premier the question is who? There will be a cat fight and expect a Belinda stunt as where a Conservative who will run for the Leadership doesn't get their way they will go over to the Liberals or even the NDP.

If you really want to watch a Leadership convention where blood will be spilled watch the Federal Liberals Leadership convention, it will be something to see.

Well currently (things can change) there are only 4 parties who hold seats or have a chance of winning seats, Kleins PCs, Tafts Liberals, Masons NDP, and the Alberta Alliance who just elected Paul Hinman in 2005 as their leader.

I am sure you know where the Liberals, NDP and PCs sit in terms of being "left" or "right wing"....just remember in Alberta Liberal Party voters dont necessarily resemble the Liberals in BC or Ontario, everything would be moved over a bit to the right.

The Alberta Alliance is the most electable right wing party in Alberta, whos supporters are more conservative than the current provincial PCs and voted for the federal Alliance and Reform Parties ( Preston Manning and Stockwell Day).

I say they (the Alliance) are the most electable right wing party because there are other parties (Social Credit, and the Seperation Party) but they dont have a strong enough following to pick up any seats. But like I said thing can change, like if the federal Liberals won the election or another NEP came about, the Seperation party could pick up steam.

NDP winning an election in Alberta  Jersay take your head out of that big bag of gasoline you been sniffing....your becoming delusional

....maybe if there was an all out nuclear war, and in the aftermath all of Canada was destroyed except for Alberta.......then maybe, just maybe the Liberal Party might have a chance.... :p

Okay, I see; thank-you, Hank C. :)

Are the two main contenders right now the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta and the Liberal Party of Alberta (they seem like a natural opposition to each other), or are the standing slightly more colourful?

yes the two main parties are the PCs and the Liberals. Like I said before Kleins PCs lost quite a bit of seats in the 2004 election. Of the total 83 seats they have fallen to 61 seats, while the Liberals gained enough for 17 seats.

Haha, okay, I see; well, stranger things have happened, I suppose there is a chance that the Liberal Party of Alberta could take a mandate (stranger elections have happened here in British Columbia — think New Democratic Government being decimated to take only two seats, being refused status as Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition).

I don't know much about BC provincially.....but I do know that the south eastern parts of BC probably have more in common with Alberta then the yuppies in the lower mainland

Contrary to what many believe, Alberta is by not similar to red state America, actaully it would probably be a blue state. I have lived in Ohio which is by no means the reddest of the red states, but it is much more conservative than Alberta. So you can imagine my shock when I made my first trip to Canada and it was downtown Vancouver 8O

Yeah, British Columbia is a "unique" province. :) Despite the fact that we have a conservative government (the Liberal Party of British Columbia is more-or-less conservative in a majority of its economic and budgetary practices) we do not have a mainstream socially right-wing party. British Columbia, along with Québec, for example, is one of the sixty-percent-for-same-sex-marriage provinces.

Well I'm happy he's leaving!!! King of Alberta will be no more.

Paradox, you are right the Liberal party in BC is extremly economically conservative. Also the NDP in BC having been moving closer to the centre as well I see.

In ontario the Liberal party here is pretty much a reflection of the federal counter part. The NDP are still liking there wounds, and the PC's are pretty close to what the Albertian PC's are. Though with John Tory as the leader many think the PC are closer to the centre now then when Mike Harris (a neo con) was incharge.

Thank God, it took him long enough. Maybe Olberg will be the next Premier... Not that it matters, I voted Alliance last provincial election.

I was wondering if the Alberta Alliance was more right wing then the Albertian Progressive Conservatives?

That explains the boom times. Campbell's party name is a misnomer. But then near normal people can vote for Cons and claim they vote Lib.
Completely normal people can vote for Campbell as they know he religiously reads my pastes so as not to stray too far off the straight and narrow.
The rest can vote for the fringe parties.. :p
