Pork pies, Pimm's and a plastic fork: M&S unveil Queen's 90th birthday party hamper

It is, says Marks and Spencer, a hamper fit for a Queen.

The retailing giant has scoured the country to find the best British products to feed the 10,000 flag-waving members of the public congregating on The Mall to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on June 12.

As a sponsor of the biggest street party the country has ever seen, Marks and Spencer is donating the hampers to those who have paid £150 to celebrate Her Majesty’s work with more than 600 charities and organisations.

‘The Patron’s Lunch hamper has been created by our food experts who have put all their passion and creative know-how into devising a very special menu,’ said Sandra Ziles, head of the product development at Marks and Spencer.

‘We’ve worked closely with our farmers and producers to ensure we showcase the very best of British produce and we’re looking forward to seeing guests enjoying the picnic on The Mall.’

The event, the centrepiece of three days of official celebrations which include a service at St Paul’s Cathedral and a special Trooping The Colour, sparked controversy after it emerged that a company run by the Queen’s grandson, Peter Phillips, was being paid to organise the street party.

Concerns have also been raised that representatives of charities and organisations are being charged £150 a head to celebrate the Queen’s life-long patronage.

Treats: Among the tasty dishes people can tuck into are salmon mousses and a 'Raspberry Royale' dessert

Although Her Majesty’s charities are being offered first refusal on the tickets and allowed to auction off a proportion of their allocation to raise funds, this has also given rise to fears that the event could turn into a corporate jamboree.

But Mr Phillips, son of the Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, and brother to Olympian Zara, insists it will be an event to remember with carnival-style entertainment and appearances by senior members of the Royal Family.

The hampers will be distributed to those congregating on The Mall to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday

Marks and Spencer says it has been working on the hampers, which will be given to the ticket-holders sitting on long trestle tables the length of The Mall, since last August.

‘Our inspiration started with Her Majesty herself and a desire to celebrate the best of all things British,’ Miss Ziles said. ‘Peter has tasted it and was very excited.

‘The starter is a Scottish smoked salmon mousse from Lochmuir, prepared using an oak tree taken from the Queen’s beloved Sandringham Estate.’

Other items include a Pembrokeshire chicken salad, Wye Valley asparagus from Herefordshire and Cornish potatoes.

There are mini piccalilli pork pies handcrafted in Melton Mowbray, and the pudding is what Marks and Spencer is calling its ‘posh Raspberry Royale’ – made from Norfolk raspberries, strawberry jelly, clotted cream and a chocolate plaque with an etching of a crown on it.

The retailer has also created hampers suitable for vegetarians, vegans and children, as well as gluten-free versions.

Guests will also be given a plate, a plastic set of cutlery, a wine tumbler and a napkin that they can take away with them.

Drinks on offer include English apple juice, water and a 250ml can of Pimm’s – something that has probably never appeared on a palace menu before.

Plastic spoons and forks!.... They are really pulling out all the stops on this event

Plastic cutlery and plates are the traditional eating utensils to be found in picnic hampers.

Incidentally, Lochmuir isn't a place. It's a brand name for salmon created by M&S.

Also, they've made a big mistake with the pork pies and ham sandwiches. I expect those to be swiftly taken out of the hamper as they are haram.
