Police are warning the public about thin ice on ponds and lakes around the city after a dog went missing in Etienne Brule Park on Saturday.
Const. David Hopkinson says they received a call about a dog wandering out onto the ice in the west-end park late in the afternoon.
“The ice broke ... police got there as quickly as they could but were not able to locate the dog,” he said. “The dog is still missing. I mean, it’s hard to say, but the dog may have drowned.”
It’s unclear if the owner was immediately located.
Hopkinson cautioned people against walking on ice, especially with the mild temperatures in the forecast this week.
“We’ve had a warmer than normal winter, so ice is not as thick as we may think.”
