phones on ebay

Hey,
I currently use prepaid, i want to switch to monthly but dont want to sign a 2-3yr contract. If i buy a phone from ebay can i sign that phone up to a monthly plan (no contract)?
I've heard that certain phones only work for certain providers.
What suggestions would you guys give when buying a used phone

if you buy a GSM unlocked phone you can activate it with Rogers or Fido, the only GSM companies in canada. GSM unlocked phones are the most common on ebay so your probably looking at those phones.

In the unlikely event you purchase a CDMA phone of ebay, it gets very tricky. You will have to match the phone to the correct network, Telus phones dont work with Bell srvice and vice versa. No phones work with Virgin so dont waste your time.since you said ur on prepaid i wont get into purchasing Mike/Nextel phones
