A solar flare Wednesday afternoon could result in a spectacular display of the Northern Lights Thursday and Friday night.
The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. said a solar flare will cause moderate geomagnetic storms until Friday.
"Aurora watchers in the northern U.S. should be looking for possible activity both Thursday and Friday nights," NOAA said in a press release.
Solar flares can knock out high-frequency communications systems, such as those used for cellphones and GPS systems.
SpaceWeather.com said the solar flare occurred around 1:46 p.m. ET and disrupted some communication systems for about an hour.
