Canada needs two new official holidays for all Cdns.
Boxing Day-Dec 26
Snowday-Third Monday in February

Many Cdns have to work Boxing Day, this is humbug, everyone needs two days off. Then we need a sleepin day in late February.
Between Jan 1 and Easter there is no holiday in the Great White North. Snowday gets my vote.

As long as employers don't have to pay for them, why not.

People need and like holidays. And it is the public that eventually pays for all this.

I get 4 weeks holidays after 10 years service. Most companies give at least 2 weeks and sick days and stat holidays.

I think we need to be careful to not turn Canada into some European state where you basically get 2 months off in a year for stat holidays. IMO.

The Canadian Government will have to have it's people talk to Walmart and then Walmart's people will have to talk to the Governments People. It could take a while before we see another Stat Holiday.

Bad idea.
The last place I worked had 12 paid sick days a year. If you were off 3 or 4 days with the flu you gained one day back a month.
Most, the majority of employees said they took all 12 off whether sick or not. You were a sucker if you did not take these paid freebies. No doctors notes were required thanks to the Union. Fridays and Mondays were the most popular days to be sick.
.. and you want to give them 2 more holidays?
What about some educational and government places that allows 6 weeks a year that can be accumulated and used to retire early?
Or paid out in cash instead? Not like private companies who have no access to taxpayer's wallets.

lol Zoofer your post reminded me of my sister. She works for the Federal Government and she gets sick days, personal days, and trips to Lake Louise to study Diversity in the Work Force. She has gone on five of these seminars this year and are they In Moncton at the Holiday Inn, NOOO they are in Lake Louise, Chateau Frontinac, you get the picture. I think she manages to go to work 2.5 days a week, Ah the good life.

There are some members of the public who want to make sure other members of the public work as much as possible. Some federal employees get too sweet a deal I agree, but does that mean the rest of the public must endure no paid time off between Jan 2 and Easter?

Canada is a long way off from two months holidays "like those European countries". Some people love the lash.

The last hospital I worked at wrote nurses up after they had 4 sick calls in a calendar year (which began the day of their first sick call) even with doctors' notes. Wonder why I don't work there anymore...

I think an extra stat actually hurts a lot of low income workers since they don't get paid for them and can't make them up. When I worked part time while in college, I hated when my shifts got cancelled for a stat holiday.
