British Rockers Franz Ferdinand Reveal All About New Album
In a brand new interview Alex Kapranos has been talking about how the recording of the hugely anticipated second Franz Ferdinand album is shaping up, and reveals a somewhat unexpected Bhangra and RnB influence.
The new exclusive interview with Kaproanos appears on Franz fansite www.franzferdinand.net and the singer talks in depth about how the follow up to the band’s multi million selling debut is progressing.
“Since we got together in the studio, we’ve been writing, arranging and recording, all three overlapping with each other.” He explained, “The last couple of days have seen completely new tunes appear. I think at last count we had around twenty five songs, of which around eighteen were contenders for the record.
“Some of the songs have seen a few re-arrangements. ‘Villain’, ‘This Boy’ and ‘Your Diary’ – songs that people may know from the live set – have seen quite an evolution.”
Kapranos was also at pains to point out that the band’s change of musical direction that has been seized upon by the media isn’t as radical as first reported, saying,
“I talked about this recently in an interview and it was a little misinterpreted. I said that this record will be “less cold”. By that I mean there will be less of those brittle synth sounds. Nick [Carthy guitarist] and I have been playing piano quite a lot, so that will undoubtedly make an appearance. We aren’t going to start slapping on string sections or horn parts however."
Despite this, the band have been listening to a varied selection of bands for inspiration, including “[Brian] Eno, The Damned, Trout, Tiger Lillies, Bowie, Bronski Beat, Beefheart, The Stanleys, Dylan. [George Harrison’s] ‘All Things Must Pass’ was on the turntable for quite a bit. A bit of Bhangra. The occasional bit of RnB. Whatever’s around. I don’t know if it has much impact on how the record will sound.”
As for the immediate future, Kapranos revealed that the band are heading to Russia to play some concerts before decamping to New York to start mixing the numerous tracks they plan to have recorded, out of which will come the record itself.
“We’re putting down tracks live in the studio with the four of us playing together,” he continued, “We put down between five and thirty takes, then listen to find the one that we like best. We don’t like playing along to click-tracks and aren’t keen on the idea of sampled drums and sequencing. We sound the way we do because of the way that we play when we play together. That’s not a very fashionable approach, but it works for us."
