CALGARY ─ Oh deer.
Patrick Ostermann was on his way home from hockey practice with his mom, Jitka Ostermann, on Monday afternoon when they came across a troubling sight.
A deer had fallen through ice into a pond just northwest of Calgary.
"It was tragic seeing her in the water, she was just stuck," said Patrick, 16.
"We felt awful."
He said they phoned animal rescue centres and Mounties, but no one could come to help right away, so they called on a friend who lives in the area to see if he could help.
Not long after, several neighbours gathered at the water's edge to try and rescue the deer.
"It probably ended up being nine or 10 people, all risking their safety to help this deer," said Patrick.
At first, the group tried to lift the animal out of the water with ladders, but that didn't work, he said.
