Cops 'rescue' stranded crackhead

By CARY CASTAGNA, POLICE REPORTER

It's further proof that you don't have to be intelligent to be a criminal. A 27-year-old Winnipeg man who ran out of gas on a North End street earlier this week flagged down a police cruiser for help -- and was busted for driving while suspended, carrying a weapon and possessing drugs.

"Police fulfilled their duties to assist a stranded citizen," Winnipeg police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Harrington told The Sun yesterday, his tongue planted firmly in his cheek.

The saga unfolded in the 800 block of Redwood Avenue on Monday morning, when the suspect -- who was with another man -- waved at patrolling officers to pull over and help him push his inoperable van off the busy roadway.

"Police obliged him by stopping to help and lo and behold, boom," Harrington said.

Officers quickly discovered the motorist was a suspended driver.

And following further investigation, cops seized an undisclosed amount of crack cocaine and crystal meth from the man, Harrington said.
Along with the illicit drugs, police also confiscated cash, a cellphone and what they described as "an edged weapon."

Meanwhile, the officers also discovered that the other man with him -- a 19-year-old -- was wanted on an arrest warrant. So they arrested him, too.

The names of the two dumb criminals were withheld by police.
