This is quietly becoming big time business. With the high cost for services in North America, and believe it or not Canada's healthcare doesn't cover everything, many people are traveling to emerging markets for inexpensive medical services.

For example, service in US costs $20k, excluding accomodations etc. Some companies arrange to put you up in top notch hotels, provide personal assistant, perform surgery etc, for usually 50%-70% savings. Latin America is getting popular. Many asian countries are as well. With the aging population and high cost in NA, particularly the US, this will continue to grow.

It's not without risk of course, but a new-ish industry is emerging and about to explode.

I recently enquired about getting an insulin pump. turns out that despite the fact it reduces the risk of all sorts of horrible complications, insurance companies don't often cover them. If i found out i could get one somewhere else, sure i'd go.

If people want to do it I hope they really look into it well beforehand. There has been good business for years in plastic surgery overseas (Brazil is particularly well known). Kidney transplants in India were also available as long as you were willing to pay to buy one from a poor person. I don't think it would be something I'd ever be comfortable doing. I know the system here.
